Centraal Station

Amsterdam Centraal is the city’s main transport hub, with striking architecture, shops and a free ferry across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord.

Amsterdam Centraal is the city’s main railway station, at Stationsplein beside the IJ waterfront. Trains, metro lines, trams, buses and ferries meet here, making it a useful starting point for getting around or heading out of Amsterdam. The 1889 building, designed by Pierre Cuypers, is worth a closer look for its ornate façade and historic architecture. Inside, you’ll find shops and station services, including baggage storage. For a change of scene, take the free ferry across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord.

A station built on the IJ

Amsterdam Centraal opened in 1889. Architect Pierre Cuypers, also known for the Rijksmuseum, designed the station in a Gothic and Renaissance style. Its position on artificial islands in the IJ required substantial foundations, with wooden piles sunk into the soft ground.

The building’s ornate façade and clock tower give it the presence of a city landmark as well as a working station. You can pause outside to take in the architecture, or look back at the façade from the Damrak side.

Getting around from Centraal

Trains, metro, trams, buses and ferries all meet at the station. It is a practical starting point for journeys around Amsterdam and for rail trips beyond the city. GVB Tickets & Info is outside the station, beside the Amsterdam Tourist Information Office, and can help with public transport timetables and fares.

For travel on trams, buses and the metro, options include a one-hour ticket and day cards. Day cards are sold at ticket machines at metro stops, among other locations. Check the current fare and where to buy your ticket before setting off.

Across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord

The ferry from behind Centraal Station gives you a free crossing of the IJ to Amsterdam Noord. It is a straightforward way to add a waterfront trip to your day without buying a ferry ticket. From the north side, Amsterdam Noord has sights including the EYE Filmmuseum and A’DAM Tower.

The station also has shops, baggage storage and restrooms. Wheelchair-accessible entrances and restrooms are listed among its facilities. It can feel crowded at busy times, so allow room to check signs and find your platform.
