Swakopmund is a seaside town on Namibia's Atlantic coast, in the Erongo Region. The Namib Desert reaches almost to its edge, so you can walk the promenade in the morning and be on a dune by afternoon. German colonists founded the town in 1892, and the old railway station, the lighthouse and German-style houses still stand in the center. Visitors come mainly for the outdoors, and the coast is often cool and foggy.
Day trips from town reach the lichen fields and welwitschia plants of the Namib, and the dunes near town are used for quad biking and sandboarding. Clear, mild weather is most reliable in April and May and again in September and October. Two or three days covers the town, one desert or dune tour and a slow day on the coast.
