Mozambique is a country on the southeast coast of Africa, facing the Indian Ocean and bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and South Africa. Its capital and largest city is Maputo, which was called Lourenço Marques under Portuguese rule. Maputo has the country's international airport. Portuguese colonial rule began in 1505 and lasted more than four centuries. Mozambique became independent on June 25, 1975, and Portuguese remains the only official language, used in government, schools and city life.
The Bazaruto archipelago and the Quirimbas Islands have clean beaches, and Inhambane Province draws divers for whale sharks and manta rays. Gorongosa National Park in Sofala province, about 3,770 square kilometres, is the main inland draw, with elephants and buffalo. The dry season runs from April to September, and the wet season from October to March is tropical and humid, with cyclones common. Much of the 30,000 km road network is unpaved, so choose one or two regions. Cabo Delgado province has had an Islamist insurgency since 2017, so check current conditions before you plan a trip there.
Five things to know before Mozambique
- Apply for the eTA before you fly
US, UK, Canadian, German and other passports on the official list can stay up to 30 days but need an eTA from the official portal first. UK advice says to apply at least 5 working days ahead. Mozambique eVisa and eTA
- Check the advice on Cabo Delgado
The UK advises against all travel to most of Cabo Delgado province and to parts of Nampula and Niassa. Check the current map before planning the far north. UK travel advice
- Carry printed copies of your eTA and bookings
Border officers can ask for the approved eTA, payment confirmation, a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Your passport needs 2 blank pages. UK entry rules
- Travel the coast between May and October
The dry season is cooler and less humid, and humpback whales pass the southern coast from about July to October. Cyclones are a risk from January to March.
- Take malaria precautions everywhere
Malaria risk exists across the country all year, including the coast. Ask a travel clinic about tablets and cover up at dusk.
