Musée de la palmeraie, Art contemporain et nature

Visit the Musée de la Palmeraie in Marrakech for modern Moroccan art, three gardens and a cactus grove away from the Medina.

The Musée de la Palmeraie combines modern Moroccan art with gardens in Marrakech’s Palmeraie, away from the Medina. Its grounds include three gardens inspired by Andalusian design, a cactus garden and a central waterway, with places to sit among the plants. Inside, you’ll find paintings, photographs and sculptures, as well as a small perfume museum. Come for a quiet break and a different view of the city’s art scene; allow time to wander outdoors as well as through the galleries.

Three gardens in the Palmeraie

The museum’s grounds are divided into three distinct gardens. One draws on Andalusian design, with inspiration from the gardens of southern Spain. Another is a dry garden planted with cacti. Together, they offer a calm outdoor counterpart to the art galleries.

A central waterway runs through one of the gardens, where frogs may be spotted beside the water. The grounds also include palms, bamboo and other plants. Benches and tables provide places to pause, so you can spend time in the garden rather than moving straight from gallery to gallery.

The collection brings together modern Moroccan paintings, photographs, watercolours and sculpture. Some of the work draws on everyday Moroccan life and culture. The displays are in studio spaces across the site, alongside the garden visit.

There is also a small perfume museum. The museum is in the Palmeraie, outside the Medina, so plan for the journey as part of your visit. The grounds and galleries make it possible to combine time outdoors with a look at modern Moroccan art.
