Punta Sur is the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, a rocky point of cliffs above the Caribbean Sea. The park has a sculpture garden of 23 metal artworks by artists from many countries, painted in bright colors, and the remains of a small Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility. Stone steps and winding paths run close to the water, and iguanas are common along them. Because the point is the easternmost in Mexico, it is also a popular place to watch the sunrise.
Ixchel and the name of the island

Isla Mujeres means Island of Women in Spanish. The Maya believed the island was a sanctuary for Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility and medicine.
At Punta Sur, the remains of a small temple dedicated to her stand on the cliffs at the southern end of the island. Little of the original structure is left, but the site still keeps her name and her story.
The sculpture park

Twenty-three metal sculptures stand in the park, made by artists from different countries. The pieces are painted in bright colors, which protects the metal from rust.
The works mix Mayan and modern styles. Along the same paths, you move from ancient ruins to contemporary art, with the sea always in view.
Walking the paths and cliffs
Stone step walkways and winding paths lead along the cliffs, close to the water. Iguanas, called toloks in Mayan, are a common sight on the grounds.
A small lighthouse stands in the middle of the park. Visitors cannot climb it, but it makes a good photo backdrop. The coast here is rugged and rocky, so take care on the edges of the cliffs.
Sunrise at the easternmost point
Punta Sur is the easternmost point of Mexico, which makes it one of the first places in the country to see the sun each day. The name means South Point, and the tip marks the end of Quintana Roo on the south side of the island.
The morning of January 1 is busy here, as many visitors come for the first sunrise of the year. For a calmer visit, come early on any day.
