Nouadhibou is a port city in northwestern Mauritania, on a peninsula that reaches into the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing boats and cargo ships share its harbor, and iron ore from the interior reaches the coast by rail from Zouérat. The city is a working port with open sand and dunes around it, so the coast and the setting matter more than monuments.
Most travelers come for two things. The first is Banc d'Arguin National Park, a protected coastal area to the south known for seabirds and flamingos, often visited by boat or 4x4 from Nouadhibou. The second is the shipwreck coast toward Cap Blanc, where old wrecks lie on the sand. The trip suits travelers who like wildlife, desert scenery and simple port life, and who are comfortable with basic services. The cooler months, from November to March, are the most comfortable time to visit. Plan two to three nights, and more for a full day in the park.

- Book a licensed 4x4 for Banc d'ArguinThe national park lies south of town on sand tracks that a normal car cannot drive. Book through an operator who arranges the park entry and the driver.Tours and tickets
- Check your visa before you book flightsMany nationalities need a visa for Mauritania, and the rules change. Confirm with the Mauritanian embassy or consulate that covers you.Visas and entry
- Get a local SIM from Mauritel, Mattel or ChinguitelCoverage drops away fast outside the towns, so a local SIM from one of these three operators is the practical choice. Your phone must be unlocked.Phones and eSIM
- Ask about the ore train seats at the stationPassenger cars run on the iron ore line between Zouérat and Nouadhibou, and seats are limited. Confirm the day before at the station.Getting around

Three days covers the town and the port. A 4x4 trip to Banc d'Arguin needs one full day more.
Do I need a visa for Mauritania?

Is Nouadhibou safe for tourists?
Check your government's travel advice for Mauritania before you book, since conditions change. Ask your hotel about local rules for travel by road.
What is the best time to visit Nouadhibou?
