Chinguetti is a small town in the Adrar region of northern Mauritania, on the edge of the Sahara. Caravans crossed the desert past it for centuries, and its old stone houses and mosque stand among the sand dunes. Some of its historic Islamic manuscripts are still kept in family libraries. Chinguetti is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes other historic towns in Mauritania.
Chinguetti suits travelers who want history and quiet more than a long list of sights. The usual way in is a 4x4 from Atar on desert track, so plan the road as part of the trip. Services are basic, so bring water and what you need for the day. The cooler months, November to February, are the most comfortable time to walk the town and visit the dunes. Mornings and evenings are the best time to walk the old lanes.
