Gozo is the second-largest island of the Maltese archipelago and part of the Republic of Malta. It lies about 6 km northwest of Malta and covers roughly 67 square km, making it more rural and less developed than its larger neighbor. The island has been inhabited since around 5000 BC. The Ġgantija temples in Xagħra are among the world's oldest free-standing structures, and the walled Citadel above Victoria sheltered islanders during raids. Gozo is also linked to Calypso's island in Homer's Odyssey.
The Gozo Channel ferry crosses from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes each way and runs about every 45 minutes in summer. A longer stay gives time for the Dwejra cliffs, the Ta' Pinu sanctuary near Għarb, and the seaside resorts of Marsalforn and Xlendi. Ramla Bay is one of the few sandy beaches on Gozo. Beaches and resorts are busiest in summer. Hop-on, hop-off buses leave from outside the Mġarr ferry terminal, and there is no road link, bridge or tunnel to Malta.

Gozo FAQ
Is Gozo worth visiting?
Yes if you want a quieter island with the Citadel, the Ġgantija temples and the coast. Most visitors come on a day trip, and an overnight stay shows a calmer side.
Can you do Gozo in a day?
Yes, with a clear plan: the ferry, the Citadel, Ġgantija and one coastal stop. Check your last return sailing so the day does not end in a rush at Mġarr.
How do you get to Gozo from Malta?
Take Gozo Channel from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, about 25 minutes, with daily sailings. Pay on the Gozo side when you leave. A separate high-speed service also links Malta and Gozo.
Do you need a car in Gozo?
Not for the main sights: buses leave from Victoria Bus Terminal and taxis fill the gaps. A car helps for cliffs, farmhouse stays and a flexible day.
How many days do you need in Gozo?
One day for highlights, two to three for temples, the Citadel, coast walks and a swim. Add a day if you want to dive or see Comino as well.
