Pulau Perhentian is a pair of small islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia in Terengganu state. Most visitors reach them by boat from Kuala Besut on the mainland. The islands are known for clear water, coral reefs and snorkeling from the beach, and for sea turtles and reef fish you can see without a boat, though sightings are never guaranteed.
The trip suits people who want slow beach days, snorkeling or diving, and simple island stays. It is a poor fit for city sights or nightlife. Accommodation is mostly small resorts, chalets and guesthouses, with few large hotels, so choose by beach and budget. Plan at least two nights to fit a boat transfer and a snorkel day, and three if you also want a dive or a rest day. The calmer season runs roughly March to October. From about November to February the northeast monsoon brings rough seas, and many operators close.

How do you get to the Perhentian Islands?
Take a speedboat from the Kuala Besut jetty in Terengganu, a trip of under an hour. Fly into Kuala Terengganu or reach Kuala Besut by road, then book the boat for your travel day.
Is Perhentian worth it?
Yes if you want snorkeling, diving and slow beach days. It is a poor fit if you want nightlife or large hotels, since the islands have small resorts and few bars.
How many days do you need on Perhentian?
Two nights covers the snorkel spots and one beach day. Three nights lets you fit a dive or a second snorkel trip without rushing the boat times.
Can you visit Perhentian as a day trip?
It is possible, but the boat ride each way leaves little time in the water. Staying at least one night is the practical choice.
When is the best time to visit Perhentian?
The calmest months are roughly April to September, when seas are usually calmer and visibility is better. From about November to February the monsoon brings rough seas and some resorts close.
Do you need a certificate to snorkel or dive?
No certificate is needed for snorkeling. For diving, bring your certification card or book a short course with a dive shop on the island.
