St. John's Cathedral Bukit Nanas

Visit St. John’s Cathedral in Kuala Lumpur for its whitewashed exterior, high-ceilinged minimalist interior and contemporary stained-glass windows.

St. John’s Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, on Bukit Nanas in central Kuala Lumpur. Its whitewashed exterior gives way to a spacious, minimalist interior with a high ceiling, white Stations of the Cross and contemporary stained-glass windows behind the altar. The calm interior offers a place for prayer or quiet reflection amid the city. You can also see the graves of two former archbishops inside. Dress and behave respectfully, as this is an active place of worship.

St. John’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur and the seat of its archbishop. It stands on Bukit Nanas, in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, and remains an active place of worship.

The first church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist was established nearby in 1883. It began as a long wooden hall with a few windows in a forested part of Bukit Nanas. The building was later rebuilt with brick walls and a tiled roof. That earlier church is now used as a community services centre.

The cathedral’s whitewashed exterior has Spanish architectural elements. Inside, the spacious, minimalist design contrasts with the colourful contemporary stained glass behind the altar. White Stations of the Cross line the interior, and large screens stand on either side of the altar. The high ceiling allows air to circulate; large fans are used instead of air conditioning.

Two former archbishops are buried inside the church. The cathedral’s calm interior can also provide a quiet place to pray or reflect when no service is taking place.

Planning a visit

St. John’s is a working church, so check its website for Mass times if you plan to attend. The schedule includes weekday Masses and several services on Sundays. Allow space for worshippers and keep your voice low, particularly during prayer and services.

Parking is limited and can be difficult on Sundays. Public transport is an alternative; the cathedral is accessible from Masjid Jamek LRT. The building has wheelchair-accessible entry, restrooms and parking.
