Liberia is a country on the West African Atlantic coast. It borders Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north and Ivory Coast to the east. Its capital and largest city is Monrovia. English is the official language and the common language of business and government, and many people also speak Liberian English, a creolized dialect. Liberia is among the few African nations that European powers never colonized. It declared independence on July 26, 1847, and is Africa's oldest continuously independent country.
The land runs from mangrove coast and swamp up to a rolling plateau and low mountains in the northeast. Tropical rainforest covers the hills, and Liberia holds about 40% of the remaining Upper Guinean rainforest, part of a global biodiversity hotspot. Sapo National Park in the southeast is a protected area. The rainy season runs from May to October and can make travel within the country harder. From November to March, dusty harmattan winds blow inland and cause problems for residents. Plan your dates around both.
Five things to know before Liberia
- Apply for a visa before you travel
British visitors need a visa from a Liberian embassy before arrival; check your own passport with the embassy. Your passport needs six months of validity when you apply. Visas and entry
- Carry your yellow fever certificate
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is needed for the visa application. Keep the certificate with your passport when you travel.
- Extend your visa in Monrovia if needed
You can extend your visa by up to 60 days at the immigration office in Monrovia for $25. Apply before your permitted stay ends.
- Bring US dollars in clean notes
US dollars are used alongside the Liberian dollar for most larger payments. Card acceptance is very limited, so bring enough cash.
- Plan for the dry season
November to April is the dry season. From May to October Monrovia gets very heavy rain, and many roads inland become hard to pass.

British visitors do, and other passports should check with a Liberian embassy. Apply before travel, with a yellow fever certificate and a passport valid for six months.
What currency is used in Liberia?
The Liberian dollar and the US dollar are both used. Larger payments are usually in US dollars; carry small notes of both.
When is the best time to visit Liberia?

Can I surf in Liberia?
Yes. Robertsport, a few hours northwest of Monrovia, has long left-hand point breaks and a small surf scene.
