Sani Pass is a mountain road and border crossing in the Drakensberg that links KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with Lesotho, a small kingdom wholly enclosed by South African territory. The road climbs the escarpment in steep switchbacks to the top of the pass, at about 2,874 meters. Go for the drive, the views over the valleys below, and a short visit on the Lesotho side.

The pass suits travelers planning a day or an overnight in high mountain country, away from beaches and cities. The upper road is rough and gravel in places, so a high-clearance 4x4 or a licensed driver is the safer choice. Weather matters: summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, and winter can bring snow and mist that close the road. Allow at least a full day for the round trip from the South African side. Underberg and Himeville are the usual places to start from.

    Sani Pass FAQ

Do I need a 4x4 for Sani Pass?

The upper section is gravel with steep switchbacks, and a high-clearance 4x4 or a licensed tour driver is the safer choice. Check your rental contract first, since some exclude this road.

Is Sani Pass open all year?

The road can close during snow and heavy rain, especially in winter. Ask a local operator in Underberg or Himeville about current conditions before you set out.

Do I need a visa for Lesotho?

Many passports enter Lesotho visa-free, but this depends on your nationality. Check the official entry requirements for your passport before you travel.

What money do I use in Lesotho?

Lesotho uses the loti (LSL), which is pegged to the South African rand. Rand notes are accepted, so carry small notes in both.

Can I drive Sani Pass and come back the same day?

Some travelers do the round trip in one day. Check border opening times before you leave, because the pass is remote and the crossing has set hours.
