Laima Clock is a free-standing public clock in central Rīga, between the Old Town and the commercial district, near the Freedom Monument and Riga Canal. Installed in 1924 to help people keep track of time, it later became associated with the Laima chocolate brand. Today it is a familiar meeting point and an easy photo stop as you walk through the centre. Take a look at the clock and its pillar, then continue toward the nearby monument, canal or Laima chocolate shop across the street.
A clock built for punctuality

Laima Clock was installed in 1924 near the Freedom Monument. The local Social Democratic Party provided it to help people keep track of time and arrive at work on schedule.
The clock’s role changed over the years. In the 1930s, a business name appeared on its stand, and in 1936 the name Laima was added, linking it with Rīga’s chocolate factory. After the Second World War, political messages were displayed on the clock.
The Laima name

Laima is the name of a Latvian chocolate brand. In Latvian, “laimas” means happiness. The factory renovated the clock in December 2017, in honour of Latvia’s centenary.
Its central position, between the Old Town and the commercial district, has made it a longstanding place to arrange a meeting. The Laima chocolate shop is across the street, so the clock can also mark a stop for local sweets.
