In short

The Madaraka Express is the simplest way for most visitors: Kenya Railways lists 8:00, 15:00 and 22:00 departures in each direction, with the morning train reaching Mombasa Terminus at 14:00. Book on its ticket site, by USSD or at a station up to 60 days ahead, and bring ID. Fly if time is short, and drive only by day with a reliable driver.

Nairobi to Mombasa: the short answer

For most visitors, the Madaraka Express train is the easiest way to reach the coast. It runs a fixed daily timetable, avoids the road and ends at a terminus in Mombasa, and the morning train takes about six hours. A flight saves time if you are pressed, and the road is a choice only for travelers with a reliable driver and daylight to spare. The Mombasa travel guide covers the city, and this page settles how to get there as part of a wider Kenya trip.

The decision comes down to three things: how much time you have, how comfortable you are with booking in Kenya's systems and where you want to end up. If you plan to continue to the south coast, the Diani Beach travel guide explains the onward transfer. If you plan a bush stop on the way, the train's Mtito Andei stop is the link to Tsavo West.

Madaraka Express train times

Kenya Railways lists three daily services in each direction between Nairobi Terminus and Mombasa Terminus. The inter-county train leaves both ends at 8:00 and calls at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi and Mariakani. The afternoon express leaves at 15:00 and stops at Voi. The night train leaves at 22:00 and also stops at Voi.

Going the other way, the same three services leave Mombasa at 8:00, 15:00 and 22:00 and reach Nairobi at 14:10, 20:18 and 03:55. The morning inter-county train is the only one that stops at Mtito Andei, which is the station KWS lists for Tsavo West. The night train arrives at a hard hour, so ask your hotel about early check-in or plan a rest before the day starts.

Read the schedule on the Kenya Railways Madaraka Express page before you plan, since timetables can change. Nairobi Terminus is the departure point for these services, not Nairobi Central, which matters when you arrange transport to the station.

Booking and payment

Kenya Railways says tickets can be bought online at its ticket site, by USSD on a Safaricom line using *639#, or in person at a Madaraka Express station. Tickets can be bought up to 60 days in advance, with a maximum of ten people per transaction online or by USSD. Sales for the Mombasa to Nairobi section stop 30 minutes before departure. The online platform and USSD service run 24 hours.

Payment is the practical difficulty for visitors. The FAQ states that credit and debit cards are not accepted at the moment, and the confirmation steps refer to M-Pesa payments, so a visitor without Kenyan mobile money may need to buy at a station counter or through an agent or hotel. Check the booking site for current payment options before you rely on it, and do not leave the purchase to the last day, since popular services can sell out.

Bring identification. The FAQ advises passengers to carry original ID documents when booking over the counter and during the journey, and a valid ticket shows the passenger's name and ID number, so use the name and passport number that match your travel document. Tickets are not transferable, and the QR code on the ticket opens the platform gate.

The rules for changes are strict. Individual tickets can be cancelled or rescheduled no later than 48 hours before departure, a refund carries a 30% fee, and a reschedule carries a 10% fee. Each passenger may carry up to 30 kg of luggage within set dimensions, pets are not allowed and the train has an onboard catering service.

Fares

Kenya Railways publishes a fare table for the Madaraka Express in Kenya shillings. For the full Nairobi to Mombasa one-way journey it lists KES 1,500 in economy class, KES 4,500 in first class and KES 12,000 in premium class. Children's fares are reduced: the table says children aged 3 to 11 travelling with adults pay half fare and children aged 3 and below do not pay, while the FAQ words the age boundary slightly differently, so confirm at booking.

These figures come from the published table and can change, so treat them as a guide and check the booking site. Return fares are listed separately, and Kenya Railways describes premium class as spacious seats with meals, entertainment and Wi-Fi. For most visitors, economy is enough on the morning train, and the difference matters more on the night service if you want to sleep.

Getting to and from the stations

Nairobi Terminus is at Syokimau, according to KWS. Kenya Railways runs a Link train between Nairobi Central station and the Terminus for passengers booked on the Mombasa trains, with listed departures at 6:40 for the 8:00 train, 12:50 for the 15:00 train and 20:10 for the night train. Many visitors arrange a taxi or hotel transfer instead, and the UK advice says to use the Mombasa Road or the Nairobi Expressway between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the city and to avoid the old airport road and Jogoo Road because of carjacking risk.

Mombasa Terminus is at Miritini, on the mainland side of the city, so allow time and a transfer to your hotel. If you continue to the south coast, ask your driver which route they use. The UK advice warns of crime on and around the Likoni Ferry, so keep bags in front of you if you cross it.

Flying instead

KWS lists flights from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson Airport to Moi International Airport in Mombasa, and a flight to the Ukunda airstrip serves the south coast, about 1 hour 10 minutes from Nairobi according to KWS. A flight is the right choice when you have a tight schedule, when you are traveling with young children or when you plan to go straight to Diani.

Flight schedules and fares change by season and carrier. Compare them on the airlines' own sites, add the cost and time of getting to the airport at both ends, and check baggage rules, which are tighter on small aircraft. If you fly to the coast and plan a safari, remember that the train and the A109 highway run through the Tsavo area, so the two modes can be combined in one trip.

By road

KWS gives the distance as about 487 km, and the A109 Nairobi to Mombasa highway runs between the two Tsavo parks. The UK advice describes driving standards as often poor and warns that carjackers may set up bogus checkpoints, that on-the-spot fines from traffic police are common but illegal and that night driving should be avoided where possible. It also reports serious accidents involving long-distance buses and minibuses, and frequent minibus hijackings and robberies.

For those reasons, a self-drive trip is a poor choice for most first-time visitors. If you do travel by road, use a reliable driver or a reputable operator, start early so you arrive in daylight, keep windows closed and doors locked and carry ID. A UK photocard license can be used for up to 3 months, after which an international driving permit and your UK license are required, according to the UK advice; see the international driving permit guide for the rules.

Which train service to pick

The morning inter-county train is the best fit for most visitors. It leaves at 8:00, crosses the plains in daylight and reaches Mombasa Terminus at 14:00, which leaves time to check in, eat and see the city before dark. It is also the only service that stops at Mtito Andei, so it is the one to choose if you want to break the journey at Tsavo West.

The afternoon express suits travelers who cannot leave in the morning, but it reaches Mombasa at 20:30, so you arrive after dark and need a booked transfer. The night train leaves at 22:00 and arrives at 03:55, which saves a hotel night but lands at a difficult hour. If you choose it, arrange a pickup in advance, ask about early check-in and do not plan anything demanding for the morning after.

Your first hours in Mombasa

Plan the arrival before you travel. Mombasa Terminus is not in the Old Town, so book a driver or a hotel pickup and confirm the name and number before you leave Nairobi. The UK advice says bag-snatching is common in bus stations, railway stations and airports, and that thieves sometimes pose as police officers or private security guards, so keep your bags in front of you, ask any official for identification and do not hand over documents in a quiet corner.

If you are headed to the beach, decide whether you want the north shore or a transfer to the south coast. The things to do in Mombasa page shows how a short city stop fits around an arrival, and the where to stay in Diani Beach page covers the south-coast bases.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is leaving the booking to the last day, then finding the service full or discovering that payment options do not suit you. The second is going to Nairobi Central station instead of Nairobi Terminus. The third is booking under a name that does not match your passport, since the ticket records the passenger name and ID number.

The fourth is planning a flight out of Mombasa on the day you arrive by the afternoon or night train, which leaves no margin for delay. The fifth is choosing a night road journey to save a day, which the UK advice warns against. Build a buffer, keep documents handy and treat the timetable as a plan to confirm, not a promise.

Which option suits which trip

Choose the train if you want a calm journey with a window view, a fixed timetable and no road risk, and you can manage local booking. Choose a flight if time is the priority or if you are heading straight to the south coast. Choose the road only if your driver and plans are solid, and avoid it at night.

A split plan works well: fly to Nairobi, take the train to Mombasa or to Mtito Andei for a safari, then fly home from the coast. Check the Kenya eTA guide well before you travel, and read the transport guide for more on moving between places. If you are comparing the city with the beach, read Mombasa or Diani Beach.

Compare cover in the travel insurance guide, and set up data with an eSIM or local plan before you land.
