Yokohama is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, on Tokyo Bay in the Kantō region of Honshu. It sits about 30 to 40 km from central Tokyo and is part of the Greater Tokyo Area, so it works as a day trip from the capital. Trade with foreign countries began here on 2 June 1859, and that history still shows in the hilltop Yamate district and in Yokohama Chinatown, which started as a community of Chinese traders in the old foreign settlement.
Minato Mirai 21 is a waterfront district of skyscrapers on reclaimed land between Kannai and Yokohama Station, and the Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel stands there. Yamashita Park, formed from debris left by the 1923 earthquake, opened in 1930 and has harbor views. Food is part of the trip too: Western-style yōshoku, Chinatown dishes and Yokohama-style ramen. Plan a half day for the harbor and Chinatown, or a full day if you add Yamate and the old trading district of Kannai. Summer heat and humidity can feel very oppressive, while winters are chilly but often sunny.
Yokohama in five
- Go for an afternoon, not a full dayMinato Mirai, the red-brick warehouses, Yamashita Park and Chinatown sit within a 20-minute walk of each other. Half a day is enough for a first visit.Tokyo travel guide
- Ride the regular train, not a passJR and private lines reach Yokohama from Tokyo in 25–40 min at ordinary fares. No sightseeing pass is needed for a day here.
- Pair it with KamakuraKamakura is about 25 min by JR from Yokohama. Do Kamakura in the morning and Yokohama at dusk, when the waterfront lights come on.Kamakura day trip from Tokyo
- Stay here only for a late or early flightYokohama has cheaper rooms than central Tokyo, and Haneda is about 25–30 min by Keikyu line. For a sightseeing trip, sleep in Tokyo.
- Eat in Chinatown, but pick carefullyChinatown is Japan's largest and crowded on weekends. Pick a restaurant with a posted menu and prices, and eat before 11:30am or after 2pm to avoid the queues.

Is Yokohama worth visiting?
Yes, for a half-day: the harbor walks, Chinatown and the red-brick warehouses are easy and free to enjoy. It is less essential than Kamakura or Hakone, so skip it if you have only a few days.
How far is Yokohama from Tokyo?
About 25–40 minutes by JR or Tokyu train from Tokyo, Shinagawa or Shibuya. From Haneda Airport it is about 25–30 minutes by Keikyu line.
Can you visit Yokohama as a day trip from Tokyo?
Yes, and half a day is enough. Arrive in the afternoon, walk from Sakuragicho to Chinatown, and be back in Tokyo by evening. Pair it with Kamakura if you want a full day.
Should I stay in Yokohama or Tokyo?
Tokyo, for a normal sightseeing trip, because most sights and nightlife are there. Yokohama can be cheaper and calmer, and works if you land late at Haneda or fly out early.
Is Yokohama or Kamakura better?
Kamakura, if you want temples and a Buddha; Yokohama, if you want a city harbor, food and evening lights. They are 25 minutes apart, so you can do both in a day.
