Shinjuku: Tokyo's busiest station and nightlife district

Shinjuku is worth a stop for the scale of its station, the narrow bars of Golden Gai and the city views from the Metropolitan Government Building after dark.

Shinjuku is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, built around Shinjuku Station, one of the busiest rail hubs in the world. Several lines run west from the station, among them the Odakyu line to Hakone. By day, department stores, electronics shops and Shinjuku Gyoen national garden draw shoppers and picnickers. After dark, the neon of Kabukicho, the yakitori stalls of Omoide Yokocho and the small bars of Golden Gai fill the streets.

The observation decks on the upper floors of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building are free to visit, which makes it an easy first stop for city views. Expect crowds at the station at rush hour. Give one day to the shops and gardens and a separate evening to the bars. Spring brings cherry blossom crowds to Shinjuku Gyoen, and autumn is also comfortable for walking the district.

Questions people ask

Is Shinjuku a good area to stay in Tokyo?

Yes for a first trip, nightlife and trains west to Hakone and Fuji. Skip it if the world's busiest station sounds like a chore with a suitcase; Asakusa or Tokyo Station are calmer.

Is the Metropolitan Government Building observation deck free?

Yes, entry is free. Hours and closures change, so check the official page on the day, and expect a queue near dusk.

How long do you need in Shinjuku?

An evening for Omoide Yokocho and Golden Gai, plus a morning for the observation deck. A day is enough if you add Shinjuku Gyoen.

Is Golden Gai worth it for visitors?

Yes if you like tiny bars. Some places welcome visitors and some are regulars-only, and some add a seating charge, so look for a posted English sign before you go in.

Is Kabukichō safe at night?

It is crowded and has touts. Decline street invitations to bars and clubs, check prices before ordering, and keep your drinks in sight. The main streets are busy and well lit.
