Takayama is a city in northern Gifu Prefecture, in central Japan, set in a basin among the steep peaks of the Japanese Alps. It is often called Hida-Takayama to tell it apart from other places with the same name. Its old town keeps Edo-period castle-town and merchant streets, and locals call it the Little Kyoto of Hida. Morning markets along the river in the town centre sell local produce, and the local food is known for Hida beef, sake, soba and sansai mountain vegetables.
Takayama is in Japan's rural mountain interior, so trips from the big cities of Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto usually take longer than trips between them. Spring is mild and dry, with cherry blossoms usually seen from mid to late April. Autumn foliage is best from late October to the first week of November. Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs usually above 30 °C, and winters are cold and snowy.
