Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in Gifu Prefecture, in the Chubu region of central Honshu. It is known for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with steep thatched roofs built to shed heavy snow. Many of these houses stand together in the village of Ogimachi. Shirakawa-go and nearby Gokayama were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Go for rural scenery and historic architecture at a slower pace. Winter brings deep snow, the roofs turn white, and some evenings have light-up displays. Spring and autumn bring green fields and fall color. Takayama is about 50 minutes away by bus, so a day trip is easy, but an overnight stay lets you see the village after the day visitors leave. Give it at least half a day, and a full day if you want to walk the viewpoints.
