Umeda, Osaka: rail hub for Kyoto and Kobe trips
Umeda is where Osaka's main train lines meet, which makes it a practical base to sleep, shop and catch trains to Kyoto and Kobe.
Umeda is the northern district of Osaka, in Japan's Kansai region, built around Osaka Station and the Umeda rail terminals. JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and Osaka Metro lines all reach the area, and underground passages link the stations to department stores, shopping streets and restaurant floors. For most visitors, that rail density is the reason to base here, since Kyoto and Kobe are both reachable by train for a day trip.
The district is known for shopping and for the Umeda Sky Building, whose rooftop Floating Garden Observatory looks out over the city. Restaurants here suit a first evening in Osaka. For street food, Dotonbori is the stronger choice. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the underground malls and the streets outside. Two to three nights gives time for shopping, one or two day trips, and a meal or two in the area.

Umeda or Namba?
