Okayama is a city in Okayama Prefecture, in the Chugoku region of southwestern Honshu. The Sanyo Shinkansen runs through it between Osaka and Hiroshima, so it fits easily into a longer trip. The best-known sight is Korakuen, an Edo-period strolling garden and one of Japan's three great gardens. It sits on the bank of the Asahi River, facing the castle.
Across the river is Okayama Castle, known as the Crow Castle for its black exterior. The original keep was destroyed in World War II, and the castle you see today is a reconstruction. The city is also tied to the Momotaro folktale and to local peaches and muscat grapes. Okayama suits travelers who want gardens, a castle and an easy base on the Shinkansen. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, and one to two days covers the city itself.

Two days cover Okayama Castle, Korakuen Garden and a day trip to Kurashiki. Add a third day for Naoshima, reached by ferry from Uno port.

Take the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, which takes about an hour. The JR Sanyo local line is cheaper but slower; check JR timetables for times.
When is the best time to visit Okayama?
April to May and October to November have mild, dry weather. The rainy season in June and July is humid, and typhoons can reach western Japan in late summer.
Is Okayama safe for tourists?
Japan has low violent crime rates, and Okayama is a calm city. Keep valuables with you and watch for cyclists on sidewalks.
Do you need a car in Okayama?
No. Okayama Station, the castle, Korakuen and Kurashiki are reached by train or bus, and taxis are easy to find.
