Kurashiki is a small city in Okayama Prefecture, in western Honshu, where willow trees line canals that run past white-walled rice storehouses. Merchants kept rice in these storehouses, called kura, during the Edo period. The kura have white plaster walls and dark tile roofs, and many still stand beside the water in the Bikan Historical Quarter. Kurashiki sits a short train ride from Okayama, so it works as a day trip or a quiet base in western Japan.
Plan around a slow walk along the canal, a few hours in the old quarter, and two nearby museums: the Ohara Museum of Art, which holds Western paintings, and the Kurashiki folk crafts museum, which shows Japanese folk crafts. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. One full day covers the quarter, and staying a night or two lets you walk it early in the morning and in the evening.
Kurashiki in five
- Get an IC card at Okayama StationSuica, PASMO and ICOCA all work on the JR trains between Okayama and Kurashiki. Buy the card at a station machine before you board, so you are not slowed at the gate by a paper ticket.Getting around
- Carry yen for small shops and cafésMany small shops and some restaurants in the Bikan Historical Quarter take only cash. Withdraw yen at a bank or convenience store ATM before you walk the canals.Money and costs
- Stay in Bikan if you want the canal at duskMost of the Bikan Historical Quarter is walkable, so a room there puts the canal and warehouses a few minutes away. A room near Kurashiki Station means a longer walk or a taxi each way.Where to stay
- Add Okayama Castle to the same dayOkayama Castle, also called Crow Castle, and Korakuen Garden are in Okayama city, about 15 minutes by JR train from Kurashiki. Pair them with Kurashiki for a day with both a castle and a canal town.
- Check the Ohara Museum's opening daysThe Ohara Museum of Art is one of Japan's earliest museums of Western art. Opening days can change for exhibitions, so check the official site before you plan the day around it.
