Kumamoto is the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's main islands. The city has about 739,000 people across roughly 390 square kilometers. Its center grew up around Kumamoto Castle, designed by Kato Kiyomasa, who is noted as one of Japan's finest castle builders. The castle's main tower is a concrete reconstruction, but several wooden buildings from the original still stand inside the outer walls.
Most visitors spend their time in Chuo ward, which holds the castle and the covered arcades, Shimotori and Kamitori. Suizenji Jojuen, a stroll garden completed in 1671, lies about 3 km southeast of the castle. Local dishes include Kumamoto ramen, a rich pork-bone soup flavored with garlic, and basashi, raw horse meat. Visit in spring to see cherry blossoms in and around the castle grounds. From JR Kumamoto Station, city trams reach the castle and the main streets, and the Kyushu Shinkansen connects to Hakata and Tokyo.

Is Kumamoto Castle open?
The main keep is open to visitors, but repairs to the stone walls and other buildings continue in stages, so some paths are rerouted. Check the castle's official page for open areas before you go.
How many days do you need in Kumamoto?
One day covers the castle, the Suizenji garden and lunch on the arcades. Add a day for Aso, and stay two nights if you want an unhurried pace.
Can you visit Kumamoto as a day trip from Fukuoka?
Yes. The Kyushu shinkansen takes about 35–45 minutes each way, which leaves a full day for the castle and lunch. Add a night if you also want Aso.
Can you visit Aso from Kumamoto in a day?
Yes, about 1.5 hours each way by train or bus. Check the volcano's status the same morning, because crater-rim access depends on gas levels and can change without much notice.
Do I need a rail pass for Kumamoto?
Not for Kumamoto alone. A return shinkansen ticket from Fukuoka usually costs less than a pass. Consider a Northern Kyushu pass only if you add Nagasaki or Beppu in the same 3–5 days.
