Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring town in Toyooka, in Hyogo Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side of the Kansai region. Its main draw is its public bathhouses. Seven of them are spread around the town, and guests traditionally wear a yukata and geta sandals to walk from one to the next. The Otani River runs through the center, lined with willows, and wooden inns and shops line the streets around it.
The town suits a slow trip built around bathing, meals and walking. Many stays are at a ryokan, a traditional inn. Winter brings snow crab, a local seasonal dish, and autumn brings colored leaves to the hills around the town. Spring and summer are also good for a visit. Most travelers spend one or two nights, which gives time to try several baths and walk the town. A day trip from Kyoto or Osaka is possible, but it leaves little time for the evening baths.
