Kawaguchiko is a lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Mount Fuji rises to the south of the lake, and on clear mornings the peak fills much of the view from the water and the lakeside paths. The town is small enough to walk in parts, with lake boats, cycling routes, a ropeway and hot spring baths.
A stay of one to two nights covers the lake, the Fuji views and an evening at a hot spring inn. The Chureito Pagoda and Oshino Hakkai are both a short bus ride away. The mountain is often hidden by cloud, so give yourself more than one morning if seeing it is the main goal. Spring and autumn suit walking and cycling, and winter tends to bring the clearest skies. Expect a slower pace than central Tokyo, with few large attractions and most of the day spent outdoors. From Tokyo, the town is reached by highway bus, so you do not need a car.

How do you get from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko?
Take the Fujikyu Highway Bus from Shinjuku Busta, which takes about 2 hours. The train is longer: take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki, then the Fujikyu Line to Kawaguchiko station.
Is Kawaguchiko worth visiting?
Yes, if you want Mount Fuji views, lakeside walks and hot springs. It is a short-stay town, so one or two nights cover the lakes and viewpoints.
How many days do you need in Kawaguchiko?
One full day covers the lake shore and a Fuji viewpoint. Two nights let you see the morning view and visit Oshino Hakkai or Fujiyoshida without rushing.
When is the best time to see Mount Fuji from Kawaguchiko?
Autumn and early winter often give the clearest views, and April brings cherry blossom with the mountain behind. Summer afternoons are the most likely to be cloudy, so aim for early morning in July and August.
Do you need a car in Kawaguchiko?
Not for the main sights. Buses serve the station and the lakes, but a car makes the smaller lakes and viewpoints quicker, and the roads are busy on weekends.
Can you climb Mount Fuji from Kawaguchiko?
Yes, the Yoshida trail starts at the 5th station on the north side. The official climbing season runs from early July to early September, and climbing is only allowed in that period.
