In short

Stay near Hiroshima Station if you have early trains or Miyajima on the list. Choose Hondori and Kamiya-cho for dinner on foot, and Peace Park and Motomachi for quiet evenings by the rivers. Book Miyajimaguchi only to catch the island at dawn. Rooms at ¥6,000 or more per person per night carry a ¥200 prefecture tax since April 2026.

Where you sleep in Hiroshima decides how much of your day is spent on trains. Stay near the station if you have early departures or plan to add Miyajima, and stay in Hondori and Kamiya-cho if you want dinner on foot. See also the Hiroshima travel guide and Japan.

Hiroshima is small and easy. The streetcar network reaches every area below, and the Peace Memorial Park is about 15 minutes from the station. The real choice is between convenience for trains and life after dark, and the four bases below sit at different points on that line.

How to choose

Start with what you do first and last. If your trip starts or ends with a shinkansen, a hotel a few minutes from the station saves a streetcar transfer with bags. If Miyajima is a morning plan, the JR Sanyo line to Miyajimaguchi also leaves from the station and takes about 25 minutes.

Next, think about evenings. The station area has chain business hotels and a mall, but few independent places to eat late. Hondori and Kamiya-cho are the city's center, with the covered Hondori arcade, department stores and the streets where Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, layered with noodles and cabbage, is served. A hotel there means you walk to dinner instead of riding back.

The price bands below are relative, per night for a double room, and are not quotes: $ is a plain business hotel or guesthouse, $$ a newer business or mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale or design hotel. Rates rise around Golden Week (late April to early May), the Hiroshima Flower Festival (3–5 May), the Peace Memorial Ceremony on 6 August and the autumn color season in November. If your dates fall in one of those windows, book the room first.

Numbers match the sections below.

Hiroshima Station is where the shinkansen, the JR Sanyo line and most streetcar lines meet, so it is the simplest base for a first visit. Miyajimaguchi is about 25 minutes away on the JR line, and the Peace Memorial Park is about 15 minutes on Hiroden line 2 or 6. Hiroshima Airport buses also stop at the station's Shinkansen exit, about 45 to 50 minutes from the airport.

The hotels around the station are mostly chain business hotels and mid-range towers, with a few small guesthouses on the side streets. Rooms are usually compact but tidy, and many include a breakfast option that starts early enough for a first train. The station's shopping and restaurant floors stay open into the evening, which covers an easy dinner after a late arrival.

The trade-off is atmosphere. After the shops close, the blocks around the station are quiet, and the lively part of the city is a streetcar ride away.

Skip if you want to walk to dinner and a drink after dark. Hondori is a 10–15 minute streetcar ride.

2. Hondori and Kamiya-cho

Best for
Food, nightlife
Station
Kamiya-cho, streetcar hub
To Peace Park
15 min walk
Price band

Kamiya-cho is the crossroads where the Hiroden lines cross, and Hondori is the covered shopping street running to the east. Together they are the middle of the city. Department stores, cafés and bars fill the blocks around them, and a multi-floor okonomiyaki building called Okonomimura is about five minutes away on foot.

This area suits travelers who care more about dinner than about the shortest train ride. The Peace Memorial Park is a 15-minute walk west, and the streetcars that run out to the station and to Miyajimaguchi stop at Kamiya-cho. Hotels here range from business towers to capsule-style stays and smaller boutique places, so the price band spreads more widely than at the station.

The downside is the trains. Reaching the shinkansen takes a streetcar ride of roughly 10–15 minutes, and with two large bags on a rush-hour car, that ride is not fun. For a very early departure, sleep at the station instead.

Skip if you have an early shinkansen and heavy luggage. The station area saves a streetcar transfer.

3. Peace Park and Motomachi

Best for
Museum at opening, quiet
Station

To Hiroshima Station
15–20 min by streetcar
Price band
$$–$$$

The Peace Memorial Park sits between two rivers, and the neighborhoods next to it are calmer than the center. Motomachi has cafés and quiet residential streets, and the Atomic Bomb Dome, the park and the Peace Memorial Museum are all within a short walk. The museum is open from 7:30am, and for the first hour (7:30 to 8:30) entry to the permanent exhibition needs an online reservation made in advance, so staying here lets you start before most of the day's visitors.

Hotels are fewer and usually a step up in price. Expect mid-range and upscale places, some with river views, rather than the chain towers of the station area. Evenings are quiet: a walk along the river at dusk is one of the best things to do here, but the restaurant choices are thinner than at Hondori, which is a 10–15 minute walk east.

For getting around, the streetcar stops near the park connect to Hiroshima Station in 15–20 minutes. Allow extra time on the day you leave.

Skip if you want lively streets and late dinners. Hondori is only 15 minutes away, but you will walk back.

4. Miyajimaguchi

Best for

Station
Miyajimaguchi, JR + streetcar
To Hiroshima Station
About 25 min by JR
Price band
$–$$

Miyajimaguchi is the mainland town at the ferry pier for Miyajima, in Hatsukaichi, west of the city. The ferry crossing takes about 10 minutes and sails frequently during the day, so you can be at the shrine before the first tour groups. The JR line and a slow Hiroden streetcar both reach it from central Hiroshima.

A small number of hotels and guesthouses sit around the station and the pier, priced below city hotels. It works well for a night dedicated to the island: a sunset at the torii, the walk back for dinner, and the shrine at dawn the next morning. It works badly as a base for the rest of Hiroshima, because the round trip to the Peace Park takes over an hour.

Dinner options close early, so plan to eat on the island or in Hiroshima before you return.

Skip if you plan a full day of Hiroshima city sights. You would spend it on the train.

Getting from the airport

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is well outside the city. A direct bus to Hiroshima Station's Shinkansen exit takes about 45 to 50 minutes according to the airport's access page. If your hotel is in Hondori or the Peace Park area, take the bus to the station and finish by streetcar. Check the airport's bus page for the last departure before you book a late arrival.

Most visitors arrive by shinkansen instead. From Shin-Osaka the trip takes about 1.5 hours, and from Tokyo about 4 hours. The JR Sanyo line to Miyajimaguchi also leaves from Hiroshima Station, so a station hotel keeps every train close. If you carry a JR Pass, compare it with single tickets first; our JR Pass guide shows when it wins.

Accommodation tax

Hiroshima Prefecture has charged an accommodation tax since 1 April 2026. It is ¥200 per person, per night, for stays of ¥6,000 or more per person, per night, measured on the room-only rate before consumption tax and meals. Cheaper rooms are exempt. You pay the tax to your accommodation, so check whether your booking shows it.

When you compare areas, compare the price after tax. Because it counts people, a double room for two carries the tax twice.

The prefecture's own page lists the details and the exemptions. See the Hiroshima Prefecture accommodation tax page before you compare final prices.

Budget and solo tips

Hiroshima is one of the cheaper big stops on the shinkansen line. Business hotels near the station and in Hondori usually cost less than comparable rooms in Kyoto or Osaka, and capsule-style stays around Hondori cost less again. Solo travelers do well in either area: both are lit and busy in the evening, and a single room in a business hotel is the standard product, so you rarely pay a double-room premium.

To save more, skip the hotel breakfast and eat at a bakery or convenience store, and check whether a room-only rate is above the ¥6,000-per-person line that triggers the prefecture tax. Luggage lockers at the station let you drop your bags on arrival day if your room is not ready. If you are traveling on a tight budget, the cheapest sensible plan is one night in the station area and a day that uses walking, the streetcar and the JR line.

When to book

Hiroshima is a smaller market than Kyoto or Osaka, so rooms near the station and in Hondori fill first. Book early for Golden Week, the Hiroshima Flower Festival (3–5 May), the Peace Memorial Ceremony on 6 August and autumn color weekends in November. Check the cancellation terms on the rate you pick, since flexible rates make it easier to reserve early and change plans later.

Property types are simple: chain business hotels dominate, with a few ryokan-style inns on the island of Miyajima, where a stay with dinner is a different experience from a city room. If you want that, check the availability of ryokan on the island before you settle on Miyajimaguchi. Our Hiroshima and Miyajima itinerary shows where the night fits.

Two guides cover the basics: the best eSIM for Japan and travel insurance for Japan. For timing, our best time to visit Japan page explains the blossom, autumn color and typhoon windows.

FAQ

Where is the best area to stay in Hiroshima?

Near Hiroshima Station for most trips, because the shinkansen, the JR line to Miyajima and the streetcars all start there. Pick Hondori and Kamiya-cho instead if you would rather walk to dinner and drink in the evening, and are fine with a 10–15 minute streetcar ride to your train.

Is it better to stay in Hiroshima or Miyajima?

Hiroshima, for most people. It has more hotels, more food and better transport, and Miyajima is 35 minutes away. Stay on the island or at Miyajimaguchi only if you want the shrine at dawn or dusk without the day-trip crowds.

How many nights do you need in Hiroshima?

One night covers the Peace Park, the museum and Miyajima if you start early. Two nights lets you split them across days and adds time for okonomiyaki, Kure or Iwakuni. Add a night for Naoshima.

Is there a hotel tax in Hiroshima?

Yes. Hiroshima Prefecture has charged ¥200 per person, per night since 1 April 2026 on stays of ¥6,000 or more per person per night. Cheaper rooms are exempt. The threshold is the room-only rate before consumption tax and meals, and you pay the tax to your accommodation.

Can I use the JR Pass to reach Hiroshima hotels?

The pass covers the shinkansen to Hiroshima and the JR Sanyo line to Miyajimaguchi, but not the Hiroden streetcars. Price your whole route before you buy a pass, since single tickets often win for Osaka or Kyoto returns.

Update history

  1. Replaced the placeholder map with a map of the areas, numbered to match the sections.
  2. Re-checked the Hiroshima Prefecture accommodation tax rate, threshold and start date on the prefecture site, the museum opening hours on the Peace Memorial Museum site and the airport bus time on the Hiroshima Airport site. Corrected the museum early-entry wording (the first hour needs an online reservation) and removed the claims about when hotels collect the tax, the ferry and airport bus frequencies, and the date stamp on the price bands, which could not be verified.
  3. Checked the Hiroshima Prefecture accommodation tax (in force since 1 April 2026) and the airport bus time against the operator's pages. No changes to area picks.
