Himeji is a city in Hyogo Prefecture, a short train ride west of Osaka in Japan's Kansai region. Its main draw is Himeji Castle, a white hilltop fortress with gates, moats and stone walls that climb the hill. The main keep was completed in 1609. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors often call it White Heron Castle for its pale plaster. Kokoen, a set of walled gardens, sits next to the castle.

The castle is the main reason to come, and seeing it properly takes a few hours. Allow extra time for the steep, narrow stairs inside the keep. Himeji works as a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto, or as an overnight stay for a slower pace. Spring, when cherry trees bloom around the castle, and autumn are the best seasons to visit. Plan about half a day for the castle and gardens, or a full day if you also want the city.

Himeji in five

  1. Get off at JR Himeji for the castleShin-Himeji station on the Sanyo Shinkansen is farther from the castle than JR Himeji station. Take the JR Sanyo Line to JR Himeji, then walk about 20 minutes or take a bus.Getting around
  2. Load an IC card such as ICOCA or SuicaEither card works on JR trains and many local buses in Kansai, so you do not need a new ticket for each ride. Buy one at a station machine and add value when you need it.
  3. Carry yen cash for small restaurantsMany small restaurants and older shops still take cash only, so keep yen notes and coins on you. Cards work in larger hotels and shops.Money and costs
  4. Take the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-OsakaShin-Himeji is about 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka on the Sanyo Shinkansen. Check whether a Japan Rail Pass covers your trip before you buy a ticket.
  5. Visit the castle at openingThe interior has steep wooden stairs that slow visitors down. Go at opening and climb the main keep first, then walk the grounds.

    Himeji FAQ

How many days do you need in Himeji?

One day covers the castle, its garden and a meal near the station. Add a second day or a night if you want the town at a slower pace or a trip to Okayama or Kobe.

Is Himeji worth a day trip from Osaka?

Yes, if you want the castle, which is the main reason to go. It is about an hour by train each way, so start early and keep the rest of the day flexible.

Can you go inside Himeji Castle?

Yes, the main keep is open to visitors. The rooms are small and the wooden stairs are steep, so it is a poor choice for anyone who struggles with stairs.

When is the best time to visit Himeji?

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms, and October to November for mild, clear weather. Summer is hot and humid, and typhoons are most likely from August to September.

Do you need a car in Himeji?

No. The castle and station are reachable on foot or by bus, and taxis cover the rest.
