Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti stands on the Grand Canal in Venice’s San Marco district, close to the Accademia Bridge and opposite the Gallerie dell’Accademia. Its position makes the exterior easy to appreciate from the canal, where the pointed arches and ornate balconies distinguish the façade.

The building’s history spans several periods. Its core dates to the 15th century, and the palace was completed in 1565. Many of the Gothic details visible today came later: 19th-century owners reshaped it in a Gothic Revival style. Baron Raimondo Franchetti commissioned further work by architect Camillo Boito in 1896, including changes to the rear wing and staircase.

The palace later became associated with the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti. Since 1999, it has hosted cultural events, including exhibitions, lectures and concerts.

The interior is known for its marble details, frescoed ceilings, Murano glass chandeliers and parquet floors. A large staircase is among the architectural features created during the later restoration. A garden is also part of the palace grounds.

Exhibitions give visitors a reason to look beyond the exterior. Past displays have included contemporary art and design, including a show with glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly. The programme changes, so check the current exhibition or event information before setting out. Access to the interior depends on what is scheduled; the palace is not a permanent public museum.

If you are seeing the building from outside, the Grand Canal offers a clear view of its façade. A gondola ride passes the palace from the water, while the nearby Accademia Bridge is another place to look back along the canal.
