Trapani is a port city on the western coast of Sicily and the capital of the Province of Trapani. It sits on a promontory into the Mediterranean, and its harbor curves like a sickle, which gave the city its ancient Greek name. Ferries leave the port for the Egadi Islands and Pantelleria, and Erice, a hilltop town, is reached from the city by cable car (funivia).
The old town dates mainly from the late medieval and early modern periods, and many of its buildings are in the Baroque style. Much of the historic centre is largely pedestrian. Travelers come for the churches, the Regional Museum Agostino Pepoli, the salt pans along the coast road between Trapani and Marsala, and the Misteri procession, which runs from Good Friday to Holy Saturday. Summers are hot and dry, and during sirocco winds from the Sahara temperatures can reach around 40°C.

Is Trapani worth visiting?
Yes as a base for Erice, the salt pans and the Egadi Islands. The old town is modest, so plan for boats and the coast.
How do you get to the Egadi Islands from Trapani?
By hydrofoil or ferry from the port, with the time depending on the island and service. Check the operator's timetable, since sailings thin out off-season.
Do you need a car in Trapani?
Not for the old town and Erice's cable car. A car helps for salt pans, Segesta and the coast, but parking is tight in town.
How many days do you need in Trapani?
Two nights for Erice, the salt pans and an evening in town. Four nights allow an island day trip and a trip to Segesta or Marsala.
When is the best time to visit Trapani?
May, June and September for warm days and calm seas. July and August are hot and windy, and the island boats fill up.
