Torre dell'Elefante

Visit Torre dell’Elefante in Cagliari’s Castello quarter to see its 1307 stonework, the elephant carving and views over the city and port.

Torre dell’Elefante rises above Cagliari’s Castello quarter, where the Pisans built it in 1307 to guard a main entrance to the medieval city. Look for the small elephant carving that gave the tower its name, and take in the limestone walls and the open side that reveals its wooden stairs and landings. The tower stands on a hill above the city and port, with views from the surrounding area. Access to the interior and upper level has been affected by renovation work, so check current arrangements before planning to climb.

A Pisan gate tower

Torre dell'Elefante

Built in 1307 during Pisan rule, Torre dell’Elefante formed part of the defenses protecting the Castello quarter. It guarded a western entrance to medieval Cagliari, where a retractable gate controlled movement between the lower town and the fortified district.

The tower was built from local limestone. Its small elephant carving, set beside the gate, gave it its name. Torre di San Pancrazio is another Pisan defensive tower in the historic quarter.

The tower’s open side faces the old citadel. From outside, you can see the wooden stairs and landings within, as well as the scale of the structure against the surrounding buildings. The hilltop setting gives views across Cagliari and its port, even when the tower itself cannot be climbed.

Renovation work has affected access, and information about reopening and which levels are available has varied. Check the current arrangements before visiting if you want to go inside or reach the upper platform. The Castello quarter also has the Cathedral of Santa Maria and museums nearby.
