Off the coast of Masua in southwest Sardinia, Scoglio Pan di Zucchero is a pale limestone sea stack rising from clear water. Its isolated shape and the contrast between rock, sea and sky make it a striking sight from the shore. Scoglio Pan di Zucchero rises just offshore from Masua, on Sardinia’s southwest coast. Its name means “Sugar Loaf” and refers to its resemblance to Rio de Janeiro’s Pão de Açúcar. The rock was formerly known by the Sardinian name Concali su Terràinu; the name Pan di Zucchero replaced it in the 18th century.

The stack is made of Cambrian limestone. Seen from the coast, its pale rock stands apart from the sea and sky, giving the surrounding shoreline a clear focal point.

You do not need to climb the rock to see it. From the mainland, the view across the water gives a sense of its isolated position and unusual shape. A gravel road toward Porto Flávio leads to a free viewpoint with a broad perspective for photographs.

The stack is also a destination for climbers, but the routes are challenging. Anyone considering a climb should approach it cautiously. For a shore visit, take time to look from the coast and choose a quieter period if you want a less crowded view.
