Castel Sant'Elmo

Visit Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples for rampart views of Vesuvius and the bay, plus the Museo del Novecento inside this hilltop fortress.

Castel Sant'Elmo is a medieval fortress on Vomero Hill, above Naples and beside the Certosa di San Martino. Its elevated ramparts give you broad views across the city, the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, with Capri and Ischia visible on clear days. Walk the fortress’s six-pointed outline, then visit the Museo del Novecento inside the complex for works connected to Naples’s 20th-century art scene. Set aside time for both the views and the exhibitions.

A fortress above Vomero

Castel Sant'Elmo

Castel Sant’Elmo occupies a commanding position on Vomero Hill, close to the Certosa di San Martino. The site began with a church dedicated to Saint Erasmus, whose name was shortened over time to become Sant’Elmo. A castle was built here in the 14th century under the Angevins, and the Spanish remodelled it in the 16th century. Its location made the hill a strategic defensive position above Naples and its port.

The complex is built from local tufa and has a six-pointed plan, with substantial walls and open ramparts. Its shape is easiest to appreciate as you walk around the upper levels. The fortress has served different purposes over the centuries, including use as a prison and military property. Today, visitors can explore its outdoor spaces and preserved rooms as well as its exhibitions.

Views from the ramparts

The high position gives Castel Sant’Elmo a wide outlook over Naples. From the ramparts, you can pick out the historic centre, the waterfront and the curve of the bay, with Mount Vesuvius across the water. On a clear day, the view reaches towards Capri and Ischia, the Sorrento peninsula and the coast around Posillipo.

The open terraces are a central part of a visit, not just a vantage point to pause at once. Walking the perimeter changes the angle across the city and brings different landmarks into view, including Castel dell’Ovo and the port. Late afternoon on a clear day is a useful time to plan around the panorama. Leave enough room in your schedule to reach the hill and explore the fortress at an unhurried pace.

Art inside the castle

The Museo del Novecento is housed within the fortress’s High Prison and focuses on artistic work connected to Naples from 1910 to 1990. Its collection includes around 230 works by 116 artists, from Naples and elsewhere. Painting, sculpture and graphic experimentation are among the areas represented.

The museum gives the castle visit a different focus from the outdoor walkways and military architecture. Temporary exhibitions and cultural events also take place in the complex, so the displays can add another reason to go beyond the views. If contemporary art is part of your plan, check what is showing before setting off. You can also combine the fortress with the nearby Certosa di San Martino, which stands just below it on the hill.
