Livorno is a port city on the western coast of Tuscany, the capital of the Province of Livorno. English speakers have long called it Leghorn. It is the third most populous city in Tuscany, after Florence and Prato. The port is one of Italy's largest, with cargo ships, cruise passengers and ferries to Corsica, Sardinia, Barcelona and Tangier. Pisa International Airport is about 20 km away, and Livorno Centrale station serves the city by rail.
Architect Bernardo Buontalenti laid out the city in the Renaissance as an ideal town with a pentagonal fortified plan. Ferdinando I de' Medici made Livorno a free port in the late 1580s, and merchants of many nations settled here, along with Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal. Venezia Nuova, the canal district, still has bridges, old warehouses and merchant palaces. Most of the historic centre was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943 and 1944. Plan a full day for the port, the canals, the seafront terrace and the Fortezza Vecchia, and add a half day for Pisa or Florence. May, June and September suit a visit best, since July and August are hot, though sea breezes help.

- Compare ferry operators at the portFerries leave for Bastia, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Barcelona, Tangier and Capraia, and several operators run them. Compare sailings for your route before you book.
- Ride the Montenero funicularAutolinee Toscane runs the city and suburban buses. Its funicular links lower Montenero to the Sanctuary on the hill above the city.
- Expect postwar buildings in the centreAllied bombing in 1943 and 1944 destroyed most of the historic centre, so much of today's architecture dates from postwar rebuilding. The older sights are the Fortezza Vecchia and the canals of Venezia Nuova.
- Learn the Livornese 'dé' and the 'r' soundLivornese speech often pronounces 'l' as 'r', so 'soldi' becomes 'sordi'. The interjection 'dé' is very common in everyday talk.

Is Livorno worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a working port city with a seafront, canals and a Jewish history that goes back to the late 1500s. Most of the centre was rebuilt after bombing in 1943 and 1944, so do not expect a medieval old town.
How do you get from Pisa airport to Livorno?
Pisa International Airport is about 20 km from Livorno, and Livorno Centrale station serves the city by rail. Check train times before you travel.
Can you visit Florence from Livorno?
Yes, Florence is a common day trip, and many cruise passengers take arranged buses from Livorno to Florence, Pisa and Siena. Check the return time before you go.
Why is Livorno called Leghorn?
English speakers traditionally used Leghorn, a name taken from the Genoese form Ligorna. Livorno is the city's Italian name.
Is the Fortezza Vecchia worth visiting?
Yes, if you like old fortifications. It is the city's oldest and most complete historic complex, with remains from Etruscan, Roman and medieval times, and it was completed in 1534.
What is Livorno known for?
Its port, a free-port trading history from the 1580s, and the founding of the Italian Communist Party in 1921. It is also the city where composer Pietro Mascagni lived, and home to the satirical monthly Il Vernacoliere, written almost entirely in Livornese dialect.
