Enna sits on a plateau near the center of Sicily at 931 meters, which makes it the highest provincial capital in Italy. Its old center stands above the Dittaino valley. The city was called Castrogiovanni until 1927, when it took back its ancient name, Enna. Its early fame rested on the cult of Demeter, the Roman Ceres, whose sanctuary stood on the rock.

Six of Lombardy Castle's towers survive, and the Torre delle Aquile offers one of the most complete panoramic views in the area. Enna Cathedral dates from the 14th century and has a yellow tufa Baroque facade. Lake Pergusa, near the city, is the traditional setting of the Persephone myth. Enna is reached mainly by road, and the railway station sits about 5 km below the historic center. Summers are cooler here than in other Sicilian capitals, but fog is frequent, on about 140 days a year. Plan a half day for the castle, the cathedral and the views, or stay overnight if you want to go slower.

Enna in five

  1. Use it as a road-trip stopEnna sits between Catania and Palermo, and buses and slow trains serve it. A car makes it a convenient break, and mid-island drives have long gaps between fuel and food.Catania
  2. Plan the Villa Romana del CasaleThe Roman mosaics near Piazza Armerina are roughly 40 minutes by car. Check the site's official page for hours, tickets and any restricted areas before you set out.
  3. Pack a layer, even in summerThe town sits about 900 m above sea level, with cooler air than the coast and winter fog. Summer afternoons can still be hot in the lower plain.
  4. See the castle and the terracesThe Castello di Lombardia and the lookout at Torre di Federico give long views across Sicily's interior. Check opening hours locally, since small sites close on set days.
  5. Book early for Holy WeekEnna's Holy Week processions are famous and fill rooms. Dates move each year, so check the calendar and book before the usual Italian Easter rush.

Enna FAQ

Is Enna worth visiting?

As a short stop, yes. The castle, the views and the quiet streets are rewarding, but the sights are modest. It works best paired with the Roman villa.

How do you get to Enna?

By car or bus from Catania or Palermo. Trains are slow and infrequent, and the station is some distance below the old town. Check current timetables before you rely on them.

Is Enna the highest city in Sicily?

It is the highest provincial capital in Italy, at roughly 900 meters. That height keeps it cooler than the coast, and sometimes foggy in winter.

Can you visit Enna as a day trip from Catania?

Yes, by car in about an hour each way. Add the Roman villa for a full day, and start early so you reach the mosaics before midday.

How many days do you need in Enna?

A morning for the castle and terraces, or a night if you also want the villa and a slow dinner. Longer stays suit road-trip rests, not sightseeing.
