Cagliari is the capital and largest city of Sardinia, an autonomous region of Italy, on the island's southern coast overlooking the Gulf of Cagliari. The city is built around the hill of the medieval Castello district, where fortified walls and two white limestone towers from the Pisan period still stand. Four historic neighborhoods make up the old city: Castello, Marina by the port, the merchants' quarter of Stampace and Villanova.
Visitors can see the Roman amphitheater, the Tuvixeddu necropolis and the Art Nouveau palazzi along Via Roma. Poetto, an 8 km city beach, is reached easily from the center, and the Molentargius-Saline park to the east is a wetland where flamingos nest. Nora, a Punic and Roman city about 35 km away, is a common day trip. Summer highs can slightly exceed 40 °C, with heat waves from June, so spring and autumn suit walking the old town. Seafood is central to the local cooking.
Cagliari in five
- Base in Castello or MarinaCastello is the walled hill with the views, Marina has the restaurants and the port, and both are on foot from the cathedral and the bastion terrace. Poetto is better for a beach stay than for sightseeing.
- Take the airport trainCagliari Elmas has a rail station, and a short train ride reaches the city center. That beats a taxi at rush hour. Check the Trenitalia timetable for the current service.
- Rent a car for the south coastBeaches around Villasimius and the Chia coast are far apart, and buses are infrequent. Collect the car on the day you leave town, since the old center is a ZTL with cameras.Getting around Europe
- Book the island ferry early in summerFerries link Cagliari with the Italian mainland. Vehicle space on summer sailings sells out, so check the operator's own site and book before you fix your hotel dates.
- Count Schengen days on a long island tripA month in Sardinia plus the mainland adds up fast for non-EU passports. Check how the 90 in 180 days rule applies before you extend a car loop.Schengen 90/180 rule

How many days do you need in Cagliari?
Two full days cover the old town, the museum quarter and a Poetto afternoon. Add a third if you want a beach day on the south coast or the Nora ruins.
Is Cagliari worth visiting?
Yes, if you like a walkable port city with sea views and fewer crowds than the northern resorts. It is a better city stay than most of Sardinia, which is mainly beaches and countryside.
Where should I stay in Cagliari?
Castello for views and quiet, Marina for restaurants and easy trains, Poetto only if the beach is your main goal. Check the street if you are arriving with bags.
Can you get around Sardinia without a car?
You can cover Cagliari, Oristano and some main towns by train and bus, but beaches and mountain villages mostly need a car. Pick up the car when you leave Cagliari, not before.
Is Cagliari a good starting point for a Sardinia road trip?
Yes. It has the main southern airport, ferry links to the mainland and car-hire desks. The island is large, so plan one direction, such as Cagliari to Cala Gonone and on to Olbia, not a loop.
