Belluno is the capital of the province of Belluno in northern Italy's Veneto region, about 100 km north of Venice, and the main town of the Eastern Dolomites. It sits on a rocky spur where the Ardo stream meets the Piave river, a site that mattered in both world wars. The old town faces the Schiara mountain group, and the northern part of the municipality lies in Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, which makes the city its gateway.
The old centre clusters around Piazza Duomo, with the cathedral, Palazzo dei Rettori and Fontana di San Gioatà around it. Venice ruled the town from 1404 to 1797, and the Palazzo dei Rettori housed its governors for almost 400 years. Summer and autumn are the easier seasons for walking. Winters are very cold, and the town is often the coldest provincial capital in Italy by average winter temperature.

Read the guideBelluno FAQ
Is Belluno worth visiting?
As a calm base and a stop on a Dolomites trip, yes. It has an attractive old town and easy rail from Venice, but fewer headline sights than Cortina.
How do you get from Venice to Belluno?
By train in about 2 hours, with services on the line through Conegliano. Check timetables, since trains can be less frequent than on main lines.
Is Belluno a good base for the Dolomites?
Yes, for the southern Dolomites and the Piave valley. For high peaks and big resorts, you may prefer Cortina or a valley town closer to the passes.
How many days do you need in Belluno?
A day covers the old town. Two to four days lets you walk in the national park or take a bus to Cortina.
When is the best time to visit Belluno?
Late spring to early autumn for hiking, and December to March for skiing nearby. Many huts and lifts close in the shoulder months.
