Agropoli is a harbor town on the Cilento coast of Campania, in southern Italy. Most visitors use it as a base for Paestum, a Greek city founded in the 6th century BC, where three Doric temples still stand in open fields. The old center sits on a headland above the fishing port, and its castle looks over the water. Sandy beaches lie on the flat land below the old center.

The town suits a slower seaside trip with a few days of sightseeing added. Late spring and early autumn are the best times to go, when the sea is warm and the beaches are less crowded than in August. Plan two to four nights, with a day for Paestum, a day on the coast and a walk up to the old center. Hotels in the town and along the beaches suit different trips, so pick by how much you want to walk and how often you plan to drive.

Agropoli in five

  1. Use Agropoli as a Paestum basePaestum's temples are about 15 minutes away by train or road, so you can see them in the cool morning and swim in the afternoon. Check the archaeological park's official page for current hours and tickets.Paestum
  2. Take the train from Naples or SalernoRegional trains run down the coast to Agropoli station, and the old town is a short walk or a local ride away. Service is slower in the evening and on holidays, so check times before you rely on the last one.
  3. Skip the car in town, bring one for CilentoIn summer, parking near the harbor and beaches is tight. A rental car makes sense only if you plan the national park, Palinuro or hill villages, and a base here works for the rest.
  4. Book beach clubs and rooms early for AugustItalian holidays peak in the first half of August, when the coast fills with Italian families. Book rooms ahead, or choose June or September for the same water at lower prices.Tourist taxes in Europe

Agropoli FAQ

Is Agropoli worth staying in?

Yes, as a base. It has a working harbor, a walkable old town, beaches and quick access to Paestum. It has few big sights of its own, so most visitors stay for the coast.

How far is Agropoli from Paestum?

About 15 minutes by train or car. That makes Agropoli an easy base for the temples, a morning visit and an afternoon swim.

How do you get from Naples to Agropoli?

By regional train in about 2 hours, usually with a change at Salerno, or by car in a similar time. Check schedules on the day, since services thin out on Sundays and holidays.

When is the best time for beaches in Agropoli?

June and September are the best balance of warm sea and space. July is hot and busy, and the first half of August is the peak of the Italian holiday.

Can you visit the Amalfi Coast from Agropoli?

It is a long day, since you cross Salerno first. Most people treat the Amalfi Coast as a separate stay and use Agropoli for Paestum and Cilento.
