Eilat

Eilat is Israel's Red Sea resort, known for coral reef snorkeling and diving, winter sunshine, and a short drive into the desert.

We may earn a commission. It never decides our picks.

Eilat is a resort city at the southern tip of Israel, on the Gulf of Aqaba, an arm of the Red Sea. Its neighbors are Aqaba in Jordan and Taba in Egypt, so both borders are close. The city sits in the Arava desert, where summers are very hot and the air is dry. The city is compact, and the beaches, hotels and downtown are all within a short taxi ride of each other.

Reefs are the main reason to come. Coral Beach Nature Reserve, a short drive south of the centre, lets you snorkel from the shore, and coral and fish sit close to many beaches. Timna Park, just north of town, adds desert hiking, old copper mines and sandstone rock formations. Spring and autumn suit beach and reef trips best, since summer is very hot. Plan two to four days for the city, the reefs and one desert day, and a longer stay if you dive.

    Eilat FAQ

How many days do you need in Eilat?

Two days cover the beaches and the coral reef. Add a day for Timna Park, the desert park north of town, and go in the morning before the heat.

    Is Eilat worth visiting?

Yes, for a Red Sea beach and reef trip with desert scenery close by. It is a resort town, so it suits swimming and snorkeling more than city sightseeing.

When is the best time to visit Eilat?

Spring and autumn suit beach days best. Summer is very hot and dry, and winter is milder and sunny.

Do you need a car in Eilat?

Not for the town itself, which is compact and has taxis. A car helps for Timna Park, Taba or Aqaba day trips, and for travel into the desert.

How do you get from Tel Aviv to Eilat?

By bus from Tel Aviv's Central Bus Station, about 4 to 5 hours, or by a short flight to Ramon Airport. Check the bus schedule and flight options before you go, since Shabbat changes both.

    Is Eilat safe for tourists?

Check your government's current travel advice before you go, since the security situation in the region can change quickly.
