Connemara is a rural region on the Atlantic coast of western County Galway, in Ireland. Clifden is its main town and largest settlement. Mountains, peninsulas, coves, islands and small lakes shape the area, with the Twelve Pins among its best-known landmarks and Connemara National Park in the northwest. Coastal villages include Roundstone and Spiddal; Inishbofin, more than 6,000 years inhabited, lies offshore. Connemara is the largest Irish-speaking Gaeltacht in Ireland, and Irish is often heard in its villages.

The N59 is the main inland road from Galway to Clifden. Bus Éireann and City Link serve the region, but there is no train to Clifden: the Galway line closed in 1935. Roads in South Connemara can be narrow and bumpy, so allow extra time for driving. The Connemara Loop is a drive of about 45 km, starting on the coastal R336 from Galway. Summer brings annual currach races and Irish-language courses at several locations. Choose Connemara for time on rural roads, along the coast and in small communities; it is not a city-break destination.

Connemara FAQ

How many days do you need in Connemara?

One long day from Galway covers a loop with Kylemore, but two or three days let you walk in the national park and sleep in Clifden or Letterfrack without driving back.

Is Connemara National Park free?

Yes. The park says no ticket is needed, and hiking the self-guided trails and viewing the visitor center exhibition and film are free. Check the visitor center days before you visit.

Can you see Connemara without a car?

Partly. The national park lists bus services from Clifden, Galway and Westport to Letterfrack, and tours run from Galway. Remote lake roads and viewpoints need a car or a bike.

Is Kylemore Abbey worth the admission?

It suits visitors who want the abbey rooms, the walled garden and lake walks in one place. If you only want the view, the roadside lake shot is free, but entry includes the garden shuttle.

Connemara or the Cliffs of Moher?

Connemara suits a slow drive and walking. The Cliffs of Moher suit a short, timed stop. If you have only one day from Galway, choose by your appetite for driving.
