Museum

Hall of Fame, Leh

Army-run museum on the Leh-Kargil Road with Kargil War weapons, Siachen displays and Ladakhi culture rooms. Stay for the evening light and sound show.

The Hall of Fame is an army-run museum on the Leh-Kargil Road, about 4 km from Leh city and near the airport. It honors soldiers who died in the Indo-Pak wars, with captured weapons, war documents, photographs and biographies from the Kargil War and the Siachen Glacier. Galleries also cover Ladakhi culture, dress and traditions. The grounds have a memorial garden and a memorial space, and an evening light and sound show is held in addition to the daytime displays.

What the museum covers

The museum was built in 1986 to honor soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pak wars. Its displays follow those conflicts, with a particular focus on the Kargil War.

The Siachen Glacier, often called the highest and coldest battlefield in the world, has a section of its own. It shows the shoes and clothing soldiers use there, the food they eat, and how they heat it with hexamine tablets.

The museum also has galleries on Ladakhi culture, covering food, traditions, customs, dress and history. These rooms place the army history within the life of the region.

The ground floor holds information about the Ladakh region and a shop. The second floor has artifacts from the Kargil War, including captured weapons and Pakistani documents from the conflict.

The Lest We Forget gallery shows photographs and citations of soldiers. Upstairs, the OP Vijay Gallery displays weapons used in the Kargil War. Personal letters written by soldiers and war documents are also on show.

An audio-visual room screens a documentary about the army. Live narration by an army official is one of the highlights of a visit.

The grounds and memorials

Outside, a memorial garden is kept well manicured. A war memorial stands at the back of the Hall of Fame. A war cemetery is nearby, and you should ask for permission before going in.

A memorial space called Shaurya Sthal is also on the grounds. There is an adventure park for children, so the grounds suit families with young visitors.

The souvenir shop sells Ladakhi items and military memorabilia.

Evening light and sound show

An evening show with lights and sound runs in addition to the daytime displays. It gives the story of the wars a different setting after the galleries have closed for the day.

Check the official website for the current show times before you plan your evening.

Getting there and access

The museum is on the Leh-Kargil Road, about 4 km from Leh city, near Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport. Park further along the road and let elders out near the entrance, because the walk from the parking area is long.
