A Mughal garden restored as a public park

Sunder Nursery

Sunder Nursery occupies a site that dates to the 16th century, when it was known as Azim Bagh or Bagh-e-Azeem. The 90-acre grounds sit beside Humayun’s Tomb and contain 15 heritage monuments. Restoration brought the gardens and historic structures back into use as a public park.

The site brings together several reasons to slow down: formal planting, open green spaces and architecture from Delhi’s Mughal past. Paths lead through the gardens and past ponds, fountains and water channels. The park’s size gives you room to walk between these different settings rather than seeing the monuments in isolation.

Look out for Sunder Burj, Sunderwala Mahal and Lakkarwala Burj, among the historic structures within the grounds. Their carved details and arched doorways offer close-up architectural details to notice as you walk. Six of the park’s monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Water is part of the garden’s design, with ponds, fountains and channels among the planted areas. A paradise garden with a marble fountain is another place to look for. The mix of stonework, water and greenery also gives the park varied settings for photography.

Trees, flowers and a slower visit

Sunder Nursery is also an arboretum, with around 300 tree species and 54 varieties of flowers. Its tree-lined routes and flower beds make the gardens a destination in their own right, whether you want a walk or a place to sit outdoors. The park is also home to many birds and butterflies, adding another reason to take your time among the planting.

You can bring outside food for a picnic, so pack snacks and a blanket if you want to make a longer stop of it. For photographs, plan to arrive before sunset; daylight is useful for seeing both the grounds and the carved details on the monuments. Humayun’s Tomb is next door, and the park’s visitor tips mention checking for combined tickets if you intend to visit the tomb or Humayun Museum as well.
