Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður, a long fjord in north-central Iceland, and is often called the Capital of North Iceland. It is the fifth most populous municipality in Iceland and the second largest outside the Capital Region, after Reykjanesbær. The town is an important port and fishing centre, and two of Iceland's largest fishing companies, Brim and Samherji, have their headquarters here. The centre grows around Ráðhústorg, the Town Hall Square, close to the harbour.

The town is about 100 km from the Arctic Circle, and its climate is relatively mild, which lets the Botanical Gardens grow plants outdoors without a greenhouse. Winters are cold and snowy, with snow on the ground from late October to April. The town is also cloudy, with about 1,051 sunshine hours a year and very little sun from November to February. Summer suits a visit best, since most festivals take place then. Icelandair flies several times a day to Reykjavík, and Route 1 covers the 390 km between the two towns by road.

Akureyri FAQ

How many days do you need in Akureyri?

Two nights cover the garden, church, old town, a swim and Goðafoss. Add one night for Húsavík whales and another for Mývatn. Fewer than two nights makes the trip from Reykjavík feel long unless you fly.

Is Akureyri worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a town with museums, a botanic garden, services and short drives to whales and waterfalls. It is the practical base of North Iceland; the big landscapes lie around it, not inside it.

Is the Akureyri city bus really free?

Yes. Visit Akureyri states that travel on all city buses within the town is free. Routes loop from Miðbær in 30 to 50 minutes, weekend service is shorter than weekday service, and holidays vary.

When can you see the northern lights in Akureyri?

Late August through mid April on clear nights, according to Visit Akureyri. Auroras cannot be promised; cloud and solar activity decide, so allow several nights and check the Met Office forecast.

Can you reach the Arctic Circle from Akureyri?

Yes, on Grímsey island. The Sæfari ferry sails from Dalvík, about 45 km from Akureyri, in about 3 hours each way, and Norlandair flies Akureyri to Grímsey on a schedule.
