Esztergom is a Danube town in northern Hungary, close to the Slovak border, and the main reason to go is the basilica on the hill above the river. It is the largest church in Hungary and it dominates the view from the water. The town was an early royal seat of the Hungarian kingdom, and the castle grounds on the same hill hold the Castle Museum. The Mária Valéria Bridge, a rebuilt crossing, runs to Štúrovo in Slovakia.
Trains run from Budapest, so a day trip is the common plan. Wear comfortable shoes, because the way up the hill is steep. Give the town a full day if you want the basilica dome, the Castle Museum, the Christian Museum and a walk along the river. A few hours is enough for the basilica alone. Late spring and early autumn are the easiest months for the climb and the river views. Stay in Belváros for a central base or Víziváros for quieter riverside streets.
Esztergom in five
- Climb the basilica dome and see the cryptFrom 1 October to 31 December 2026 the dome lookout is listed 9:00 to 16:30 and the crypt and treasury 9:00 to 17:00. Last entry and ticket sales close earlier, so arrive by mid-afternoon.
- Enter the basilica church for freeThe basilica's website says entering the liturgical space without a guide is free. You pay only for the dome, treasury and crypt, so skip the combined ticket if you want only the interior.
- Add the castle museum on the royal hillThe castle museum shows the royal chapel and a glass floor over 2,000-year-old archaeological layers, with a panorama from the White Tower. Narrow stairs mean only a small part works for wheelchairs and strollers.
- Cross the Mária Valéria bridge to ŠtúrovoThe bridge to Párkány (Štúrovo) in Slovakia was destroyed in 1944 and reopened in 2001. Carry your passport for the crossing and allow time for the walk.
- Choose Szentendre for half a dayEsztergom is far enough that it fills a day. With less time, the H5 suburban rail to Szentendre is the easier Danube Bend stop.Szentendre travel guide

Is Esztergom worth a day trip from Budapest?
Yes if you want a basilica with a dome lookout, a royal castle museum and a river town. It fills a day, so it works best when you start early.
How much does the Esztergom Basilica cost?
Entering the church without a guide is free. For 2026 the basilica lists 5,600 HUF for the combined ticket, 3,300 HUF for the dome lookout, 2,100 HUF for the treasury and 800 HUF for the crypt.
Can you walk to Slovakia from Esztergom?
Yes. The Mária Valéria bridge links Esztergom with Párkány (Štúrovo) in Slovakia and reopened in 2001. Carry your passport, and check the rules for your nationality in the visa checker.
How long do you need in Esztergom?
Plan a full day: the basilica dome and crypt, the castle museum and a walk along the Little Danube promenade. Add a night only if you want an evening across the bridge.
Is Esztergom suitable with a stroller or wheelchair?
Only partly. The castle museum has narrow stairs, and only a small part works for wheelchairs and strollers, so check the museum's own site before you go.
