Tikal National Park

Explore Maya temples rising from the jungle at Tikal, with monkeys and toucans in the ruins. Plan an early start from Flores and wear walking shoes.

Tikal is a Maya city of temples, plazas and palaces spread across the jungle in Guatemala. Many structures rise above the trees, while others remain partly buried or covered by vegetation, so the site still shows how much lies hidden. Paths lead between the building groups, and some pyramids can be climbed. Monkeys, toucans and parrots move through the ruins, and a local guide adds the stories behind the buildings. Expect a long day of walking.

Reaching the site from Flores

Tikal National Park
Tikal National Park

Many trips to Tikal start in Flores, and the journey calls for an early departure. Visitors who take a tour from Flores travel by bus, which is one reason some choose a guide who handles the transport.

For sunrise visits, the park admits people from 4 AM, and the sunrise ticket costs extra. Arriving before the crowds gives you the paths and temples with fewer people around.

What the ruins look like

The site is large, and the temples are spread across it rather than grouped in one plaza. Some are fully uncovered, while others still sit under soil and forest growth. The site is less restored than some other Maya sites from a similar period, so it feels more raw and less polished. Some visitors find that gives it a more primitive character.

The pyramids are the highlight for many people. Where access is permitted, you can climb them and walk the upper levels. Not every structure is open to climbing, so look for the ones that are.

Wildlife in the forest

The jungle around the ruins is full of animals. Monkeys are common along the paths, and toucans and parrots fly overhead. Other birds and mammals appear as you walk between the buildings, so keep your eyes on the trees as well as the stone.

Many visitors say the wildlife is as memorable as the architecture, especially on the quieter early hours.

Tickets and guides

Tickets can be bought online through the government website or at the entrance. Foreign visitors have paid 150 quetzales to enter, and sunrise entry adds 100 quetzales. Confirm current prices and rules on the official site before you travel.

A guide is not required, and some visitors explore on their own. A local guide is still recommended, especially for dawn walks. The guide explains the purpose of each group of buildings and helps you move safely in low light.

Sunrise and weather

Sunrise is the most atmospheric time to visit, but it is not guaranteed. Mist can cover the site until late morning, which can hide the temples and reduce the view. Some visitors who go for sunrise still come away impressed by the walk in the dark and the sounds of the forest waking up.

If you want clear views of the temples, plan for a full morning and accept that the weather decides the light.
