The remains stand near the entrance to Rhodes Old Town, by the Liberty Gate and Symi Square. The sanctuary dates to the 3rd century BCE and was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Its position close to the harbor fits the ancient association between Aphrodite and ports.

The site is modest: surviving pieces include column remains and large building blocks. Look for the informational boards, which show a reconstruction of the temple and shrine. The statue of Aphrodite believed to have stood here is now in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.

The temple sits among traces of several periods of Rhodes’ history. Behind the remains is the Lodge of the Knights of Auvergne, built in 1507 and now used as the governor’s office. Nearby, the former English knights’ lodge and the first hospital of the Knights are also noted in accounts of the area; the hospital building, built in 1440, now houses the Library of the Archaeological Society.

From the temple, continue towards Argyrokastro Square. The Archaeological Museum is by the archway into Knights’ Square, where the Street of the Knights leads towards the Grand Master’s Palace.
