Oia is a village at the northern tip of Santorini, in the Cyclades islands of Greece. Its houses stand along the cliff edge above the caldera, many cut into the rock or set into the hillside. Visitors come for the whitewashed walls, blue-domed churches and narrow stepped lanes, and for the sunset, when crowds gather on the western cliffs each evening.
Oia suits couples, photographers and travelers who want cliff views and a slow pace. The lanes are steep, and they fill up in the evenings. The main sunset spots fill well before dusk, so arrive early. Hotels range from cave suites on the rim to simpler rooms inland, and the location affects both the price and the walk back at night. Spring and autumn are cooler and quieter than summer. Plan at least two nights, or three if you want the caldera walk from Fira and a day trip around the island.

Oia FAQ
How many days do you need in Oia?
A half day covers the lanes, the castle and sunset. One night lets you see the village at dawn and after the day-trippers leave. Add a second day only for the Fira path or a boat trip.
Is Oia worth visiting?
Yes, for the architecture, the light and the views, but it is crowded around sunset in summer. Go early in the day, in May, June, September or October, and treat sunset as one planned hour.
Is Oia or Fira better to stay in?
Oia is quieter after dark and costs more for rim rooms. Fira has more restaurants, buses and nightlife. Stay in Oia for views, Fira for convenience, or split the nights between them.
What time is sunset in Oia?
Sunset falls between roughly 5pm in midwinter and 8:30pm in midsummer, local time. Look up the date before you go, then arrive well ahead because the best viewpoints fill early.
Can you walk from Fira to Oia?
Yes. The caldera path runs about 10 km via Firostefani and Imerovigli and takes 3–4 hours. Start early, carry water, and take the bus back to Fira.
