Mykonos is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea, about 150 km east of Athens. Visitors come mainly for the beaches and the nightlife, and the island is one of the most visited in Greece. Its main town, Chora, sits on the west coast and holds most of the island's 10,704 residents (2021 census). The island is called the Island of the Winds because strong winds blow often.
Chora's windmills, built by the Venetians in the 16th century, stand in a row on a hill above the sea, and many have been restored. Little Venice, a waterfront of old houses with balconies over the water, is a popular sunset spot. Delos, an archaeological site, is reached by tour boat. Summer is hot, dry and sunny, cooled by the meltemi, and rain falls mostly from October to March. Three nights covers Chora and a couple of beaches, while a week leaves room for a day out to Delos.
