In short

Choose Kefallonia for big scenery, caves and quiet villages, and plan to drive. Choose Zakynthos for a smaller island with turtle beaches, sea caves and a livelier resort scene. Choose Corfu for a UNESCO old town, green hills and the most services. Kefallonia and Zakynthos pair by seasonal ferry; Corfu is far to the north and is better as its own trip.

The short answer

Kefallonia, Zakynthos and Corfu are the three Ionian islands most visitors weigh against each other, and they feel different. Kefallonia is large and dramatic, with big beaches, caves and stone villages spread over steep roads. Zakynthos is smaller, with turtle beaches, sea caves and a livelier resort scene. Corfu is green and busy, with a UNESCO old town and the most services. The Kefallonia travel guide covers the first, the Zakynthos travel guide the second and the Corfu travel guide the third, and the Greece guide covers the rest of Greece.

If you want scenery and are happy to drive, choose Kefallonia. If you want a smaller island with beaches and boat trips close together, choose Zakynthos. If you want a town to walk, a green landscape and an easy base, choose Corfu. All three are best from May to October, when boats, tavernas and mountain villages are open.

Geography matters too. Kefallonia and Zakynthos lie close together in the central Ionian and are linked by a seasonal ferry, so a trip can combine them. Corfu lies far to the north, near the Albanian coast, and is better as a separate trip or a separate week.

Kefallonia: scale, caves and villages

Kefallonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, and its charm lies in the variety. Myrtos Beach lies below a steep switchback road, the Melissani cave lake and the Drogarati cave sit near Sami in the east, and Fiskardo and Assos give the north a village feel. Mount Ainos, covered in native fir, rises in the middle, and the south has the long sandy beach at Skala.

The strengths are space and scenery. Even in August there are quiet corners, and the villages of the north have an unhurried feel. The island suits visitors who like to drive, to pick a coast and to explore. Our Kefallonia in 5 days route shows how a loop works, and where to stay in Kefallonia compares the main bases.

The weaknesses are distance and the car. Most sights are 30 to 60 minutes apart on winding roads, public transport is thin outside Argostoli, and a trip without a car is limited. The nightlife is modest, and the best beaches can be rough in wind. Kefallonia is not the best choice if you want everything within a short walk.

Zakynthos: turtles, caves and a lively south

Zakynthos, also called Zante, is a smaller island south of Kefallonia, known for its sandy bays, sea caves and the shipwreck cove of Navagio, which is seen from a boat or a clifftop viewpoint. Landing and swimming in the cove are banned for the 2026 season (until 31 October 2026), according to a joint ministerial decision reported by Greek public broadcaster ERT, so check the rules for your dates. Laganas Bay in the south is a protected area for loggerhead turtles, with rules about boats and beaches. Boat trips to the Blue Caves leave from the north of the island.

The strengths are compactness and beach variety. Many sights are within an hour's drive of each other, boat trips are easy to book and the resort areas have a lively evening scene. The island has a wide choice of hotels and apartments, from quiet villages to busy resorts, and it suits visitors who want sea and sand with sightseeing on the side. Our Zakynthos guide has more.

The weaknesses are crowds and the party scene. Laganas and Tsilivi are busy in summer, and the best-known viewpoints and boat trips can feel crowded. Access to some sites changes with conditions and rules, so check the current situation before you plan your day. Zakynthos is not the best choice if you want an old town or a calm, empty coast.

Corfu: old town, green hills and services

Corfu lies off the northwest coast of Greece, and it looks and feels different from the central islands. The old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Venetian houses, fortresses and a long green square. The north has Mount Pantokrator and mountain villages, the west has cliffs and small bays, and the south has quiet lagoons and beaches.

The strengths are the town and the infrastructure. Corfu has the most services of the three, with a big choice of rooms, restaurants and day trips, and it is easy to base yourself in the old town without a car. It is also green, which gives it a different character from the drier islands to the south. See our Corfu in 5 days itinerary for a route.

The weaknesses are crowds and distance. Cruise ships and day trippers fill the old town in summer, the beaches are mostly small coves and pebbles, and the best parts of the island need a car. It is also a long way from Kefallonia and Zakynthos, so a combined trip means a flight or a long ferry journey. Corfu is not the best choice if you want big sandy beaches or dramatic cliffs on a quiet road.

Side by side

On scenery, Kefallonia wins for scale and drama, and Corfu for greenery. On beaches, Zakynthos has the most accessible sandy bays, Kefallonia the biggest and wildest, and Corfu the most coves. On towns, Corfu is the clear winner, with a UNESCO old town, while Argostoli on Kefallonia is a working capital and Zakynthos Town is smaller and rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake.

On evenings, Zakynthos has the liveliest resorts, Corfu has the broadest choice and Kefallonia is the quietest. On getting around, none of the three is easy without a car, though Corfu Town and some Zakynthos resorts can be done on foot or by taxi. On flights and ferries, check what is available from your home airport, since direct routes change by season.

Cost depends more on the month and the base than on the island. All three are busiest and most expensive in July and August, and cheaper in May, June, September and October. Rental cars run short in summer on all three, so book early. Compare the total at booking, including any local accommodation tax; the guide to tourist taxes in Europe explains how these charges usually appear.

Weather and sea shape the choice as well. The Ionian islands get more rain than the Cyclades in winter, which is why the hills are green, and wind can make some west-facing beaches rough on any island. Kefallonia and Zakynthos both have west coasts where swimming conditions change from day to day, so keep a second beach in mind, ideally on a sheltered side. Corfu has more sheltered coves on its east coast, which helps on windy days.

How to choose, and how to combine

Start with the kind of trip you want. If it is a road trip with swims, caves and quiet villages, pick Kefallonia. If it is a beach holiday with boat trips and a lively evening, pick Zakynthos. If it is a trip with a town, green hills and an easy base, pick Corfu. Then think about the length: four to six days on Kefallonia, four to five on Zakynthos and five to seven on Corfu.

If you want two islands, pair Kefallonia and Zakynthos. A seasonal ferry runs between Pesada and Agios Nikolaos, and a week split between the two gives a good contrast of scenery and sand. The timetable does not cover every day, so check the operator's schedule for your dates, since sailings run in summer and weather can delay them. Corfu is better saved for a separate trip or a week of its own.

Then plan the practical details. Get an eSIM for navigation on coast roads, and compare travel insurance for rental-car excess, cancelled ferries and boat trips. The best time to visit Greece guide shows how the seasons compare, and Getting around Greece covers cars, buses and boats.

Who should not choose each island

Skip Kefallonia if you do not drive or if long mountain roads make you nervous, because the best beaches and villages are far apart and public transport is thin. Skip Zakynthos if your idea of a beach day is an empty cove, since the best-known spots draw boat traffic and crowds in summer, and the famous shipwreck cove is currently seen from a boat or the viewpoint only. Skip Corfu if you want one compact beach holiday with a short transfer from Kefallonia or Zakynthos, because it is a separate trip rather than a hop.

On a wet or windy day the islands behave differently. Corfu Town and Argostoli have museums, cafes and covered streets, Zakynthos has boat trips that may be cancelled in swell, and Kefallonia has caves and mountain villages that do not depend on the sea, though you should check opening hours for each site. A common mistake is booking one base for a whole week on an island where the sights are far apart. Splitting the stay between two bases, one on each side of the island, cuts the daily driving and gives you a second beach when the wind turns.

FAQ

Is Kefallonia, Zakynthos or Corfu best for a first Ionian trip?

Corfu if you want a town, easy services and a green island. Kefallonia if you want dramatic scenery and are happy to drive. Zakynthos if you want turtle beaches, boat trips and a livelier evening scene on a smaller island.

Which island is best for beaches?

All three have good ones. Kefallonia has big, dramatic beaches such as Myrtos and a long south coast, Zakynthos has sandy bays and the Navagio area, and Corfu has many small coves and pebble beaches. Sea conditions and wind change the choice day to day.

Do you need a car on all three islands?

On Kefallonia, for most trips. On Zakynthos and Corfu, a car helps a great deal outside the main resorts, though Corfu Town and some resort areas can be done without one. Compact cars suit the narrow roads of all three.

Can you visit Kefallonia and Zakynthos on the same trip?

Yes. A seasonal ferry links Pesada on Kefallonia with Agios Nikolaos on Zakynthos, so a week split between them works well. The operator, Ionion P. Lines, publishes a seasonal timetable that does not cover every day of the week, so check it for your dates; weather can also delay sailings.

Which Ionian island is the quietest?

Kefallonia, outside the main resorts, since it is large and spread out. Corfu has some quiet corners in the north and west, while Zakynthos is busiest around Laganas and Tsilivi in summer.

How many days do you need on each island?

Four to six days on Kefallonia, four to five on Zakynthos and five to seven on Corfu. A week on one island is usually better than a rushed hop between two, unless you choose Kefallonia and Zakynthos.
