Beach

Gidaki beach

Plan a visit to Gidaki Beach on Ithaca, with clear water, a pebbled shore and boat access from Vathy, or a steep hike through the countryside.

Gidaki is a secluded pebble beach on Ithaca in Greece’s Ionian Islands, known for clear blue water and white cliffs topped with green vegetation. You can arrive by boat from Vathy or take a steep, demanding hike; the boat is the easier option. Small stones cover the shore and seabed, so water shoes help. A small beach bar and some sunbeds provide basic comforts, but much of the cove remains open. Bring water and food if you want more choice.

Reaching the cove

Gidaki lies on Ithaca’s east coast. The most straightforward approach is by boat from Vathy; a water taxi is another option. Boat trips run from the harbour, but departure and return times depend on the service, so check arrangements before setting out.

You can also reach the beach on foot. The route from Vathy is a strenuous hike, with steep sections and narrow paths. One reported walking time is about 75 to 90 minutes each way. The route from Skinos is shorter, but still steep in places, with a sharp descent near the beach. Wear suitable footwear and carry enough water for the walk.

Pebbles, swimming and facilities

Small white stones cover both the shore and the water’s edge. Water shoes or sandals make getting in and out more comfortable. The cove is backed by pale cliffs and green vegetation, and the water is clear enough to see the stones below.

Facilities are limited to a small bar or snack shack and some sunbeds and umbrellas. The bar serves simple food, including souvlaki, sausages and chips, as well as drinks. Much of the shore has no sunbeds, so bring what you need if you plan to spend time away from the bar. Take your own water and snacks if you want more than the basic food available.
