Skaros Rock

Hike to Skaros Rock near Fira for medieval fortress remains, Panagia Theoskepasti Chapel and caldera views. Expect steep steps and rocky ground.

Skaros Rock is a volcanic headland below Imerovigli, on Santorini’s caldera edge near Fira. A trail descends from the village and climbs across rocky, uneven ground to the remains of a medieval fortress. Along the way, look for Panagia Theoskepasti Chapel at the base and views over the caldera and Aegean Sea. The exposed route is a rewarding detour for hikers, but steep steps and a tricky final climb make it unsuitable for visitors with mobility difficulties.

A fortress above the caldera

Skaros Rock

Skaros is a rocky headland extending from Imerovigli into the caldera. Its position above the sea made it a defensive site: the settlement was one of Santorini’s fortified strongholds against pirate attacks. A fortress was built here in the early 13th century, and Skaros later became the island’s medieval capital.

The site was inhabited for centuries, but little of the settlement remains visible today. Eruptions and earthquakes damaged the fortress and the surrounding buildings; the settlement was eventually abandoned. On the rock, the ruins are scattered and easy to miss, so the landscape and the setting are as much a part of the visit as the remains themselves.

The route from Imerovigli

The path begins in Imerovigli and descends by steep steps toward the rock. Panagia Theoskepasti Chapel sits at its base. From there, the route continues over rough, uneven ground, with a steeper, more difficult section if you want to climb toward the top. You can turn back after seeing the chapel and the headland without attempting the final climb.

The route is part of the walking landscape between Fira and Oia, but the detour adds effort and time. The trail is exposed, and there is no lighting after dark. Bring water, wear shoes suited to rocky paths, and leave enough daylight for the return. The steep, irregular sections make this a poor choice if you have mobility difficulties.

Views and what remains

As you move away from Imerovigli, the village sits behind the rocky outcrop while the caldera and Aegean open around it. Views are available along the route as well as from higher points, so you do not need to reach the top to appreciate the setting. On the far side of the rock, a small chapel and additional ruins are among the details to look for.

Skaros is also a place to understand Santorini’s medieval defenses in their landscape. The settlement occupied a steep headland, with cliffs protecting much of its perimeter. The remaining structures are limited, but the scale of the rock and its position above the sea make the former stronghold’s location clear.

Choosing when to go

Early morning avoids the strongest midday heat, while the light near sunset draws hikers looking for views over the caldera. If you go late in the day, allow time to return before dark: there is no trail lighting. Sunset is a reason to choose the route, but it is not a shortcut to a viewpoint; the descent and rocky climb take care and daylight.

You can approach Skaros as a short excursion from Imerovigli or include it as a detour on the Fira to Oia walk. If you are already tired or short on time, view the rock from the main trail instead of adding the descent and climb.
