Vai Beach

Plan a visit to Vai Beach in northeast Crete, known for its protected Cretan date palm grove, clear swimming water and views from Sky Point.

Vai Beach lies on Crete’s remote northeast coast, where a broad sandy shore meets a protected grove of Cretan date palms. The palms are the reason to make the trip; clear water and a seabed of sand and rocks also make the bay appealing for swimming and snorkeling. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, try water sports, or eat at one of the two restaurants and shops near the beach. For a view across the shoreline and grove, climb to Sky Point above the beach.

The palm grove and the shore

The grove of Cretan date palms is Vai’s defining feature. It grows beside the sandy beach and is protected, so visitors should enjoy it from the shore rather than walk among the trees. The combination of palms, pale sand and clear water gives this part of Crete a setting that differs from the island’s more familiar dry landscapes.

Accounts of the grove’s size vary, but they consistently describe it as Europe’s largest natural palm forest. The palms are native to Crete. Vai is also part of the island’s far eastern coast, where the beach sits among rocky slopes and small bays.

Swimming, snorkeling and the view

The shore has sand that ranges from coarse to fine, with rocks in parts of the seabed. The water is clear, and the shallow bay is suited to swimming. Snorkelers can look across the mixture of sand and larger rocks below the surface; a small islet off the beach is also noted as a snorkeling spot.

For a view from above, follow the steps and rocks to Sky Point on the right side of the entrance. The lookout gives a panorama of the beach and palm grove. Stone steps lead to an established viewpoint with benches, so you can pause there before returning to the shore.

Facilities and the protected setting

Vai has sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, water sports, parking, and two places to eat or buy refreshments. One caters to meals, while the other is suited to snacks and drinks. The available sunbeds differ in style and position: simpler ones farther from the entrance are more spread out than the options near the entrance.

The beach is in a remote part of Crete’s northeast, and the approach is described as a winding mountain drive from Sitia. A visit can take up much of the day if you plan to swim, eat and explore the viewpoint. The protected grove is not open for visitors to enter, so keep your walk to the beach and designated viewing areas.

A beach that became widely known

Vai was little known outside the area until the 1970s, when a television advertisement filmed there brought attention to its palm-lined shore. Its popularity has grown around the unusual pairing of a natural palm grove and a sandy swimming beach. That popularity also means the shore can fill up in high season, especially later in the morning.

The setting is the main reason to make the journey: the grove is right beside the beach, while Sky Point gives a wider view of both. Nearby beaches along the coast include Minoan Bay, Kouremenos Beach and Paralia Chonia, which can be considered if you are exploring this part of Crete.
